Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor begins his war with David Corenswet’s Superman in new DC Universe art. As July progresses forward, the world is actively waiting for James Gunn’s Superman movie, which will be arriving in theaters a year from now. Even though plot details are being kept under wraps, the new Man of Tomorrow will be facing Lex as one of his first opponents in the DC Universe, as Hoult will be playing the iconic antagonist in Superman.

While it remains to be seen how the DC Universe will tackle the rivalry between Superman and Lex, this has not stopped fans from speculating about how Gunn will reimagine their dynamic in the upcoming DC Universe. With only a couple of weeks left for Superman’s filming process, captracc_ shared new art where they brought Corenswet’s Man of Steel up against Hoult’s Lex.

While Hoult has been spotted on set as Lex, he has yet to be seen with Corenswet’s titular hero throughout the many recent Superman set photos that have made their way online. Time will tell over the coming weeks whether or not Hoult and Corenswet’s respective characters will shoot any scenes together on location.

How James Gunn’s DC Universe Can Add New Layers To Superman & Lex Luthor’s Rivalry

Throughout the many live-action Superman movies and TV shows that have come over the last few decades, there have been various approaches to Lex and Clark Kent’s dynamic. With Superman having Hoult and Corenswet play the respective characters, as the actors are close in age in real life, the DC Universe may be taking the long run with Lex and his hatred for the Man of Steel. Given the long history they have in the comics, the Lex and Superman rivalry could be fleshed out to last for several years in the new franchise.

With Gunn’s DC Universe, this could also be the first movie franchise to finally have Lex perhaps even take Superman on physically. From his famous Lexosuit to the DC arcs where he even has powers, the DC Universe can tackle Superman and Lex’s war, both philosophically but also in a way that brings new stakes for their relationship in the world of live-action. If Lex even ends up being one of the main antagonists of the DC Universe, the Superman movie can perfectly seed the idea for him to get a larger role in future films and TV shows.

While it remains to be seen when it will release, once the first Superman trailer drops, this will likely give a better idea of how integral Lex will be to the overall story. Even though he is a villain in Superman, time will tell if he is the main foe, or if there will be other forces for Krypton’s last son to deal with in this movie. But until the first footage is released, the DC Universe audience will have to continue to speculate about what is going down between Clark and Lex in the new Superman film next year.
