  • Megumi May Not Have the Will To Reclaim His Body Just Yet

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #263 of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s latest chapter has yet again revived hopes for the return of a fan-favorite character who may be brought back against all odds. Ever since Sukuna assumed his fully reincarnated form against Kashimo, the chances for Megumi’s return have been slim, even more so when it seemed like Megumi had completely lost the will to fight back. However, the newest chapter suggests there may still be hope for Megumi’s return.

Chapter #263 of Jujutsu Kaisen reveals that Yuji has made a binding vow to narrow the target of his cursed technique and make his strikes even more effective at weakening Sukuna’s control over his body. It appears as though Yuji may have possibly traded physical damage in exchange for being able to use Dismantle only on the barrier between Megumi and Sukuna’s souls even more forcefully than before.

The effect of Yuji’s new strengthened punches is seen almost immediately as they force Sukuna to throw up a couple of his fingers. Moreover, for the first time since the battle against Gojo, Sukuna admits to the possibility of him losing, claiming that he could lose his current body unless he manages to dodge Yuji’s blows. This, coupled with Hana finally landing a direct hit on Sukuna with Jacob’s Ladder, indicates Megumi’s return may be all but inevitable.

While Yuji’s soul-capturing punches have previously been able to disrupt Sukuna’s Cursed Energy enough for Yuji to reach Megumi’s soul, the latest chapter hints they may be capable of much more. It has already been established that Yuji’s attacks weaken Sukuna’s control over his host. However, the fact these blows were enough to make Sukuna retch up a couple of fingers implies they can quite literally weaken Sukuna’s power by forcing his fingers out of Megumi’s body.

Moreover, the latest chapter also sees Hana enter the battlefield and finally manage to hit Sukuna with Jacob’s Ladder head on, and it seems like the third time might in fact do the trick. Though Yuta previously tried to use Jacob’s Ladder on Sukuna, the attack inexplicably didn’t work. However, this time around Sukuna is in the weakest state he has ever been in the entire battle so far.

Though Yuta’s Hollow Purple was not as powerful as Gojo’s it did still manage to inflict significant damage on Sukuna whose Cursed Technique is also currently burnt out, putting him in a most vulnerable state. Add to this his weakened control over Megumi’s body from Yuji’s attacks and it seems like Jacob’s Ladder may indeed be effective this time, finally bringing Megumi back even if momentarily.

As things stand, it is possible that Megumi may be able to momentarily regain control over his body. However, whether he will be able to suppress Sukuna’s soul is a different matter entirely. Megumi was driven to partake in the Culling Game solely to save Tsumiki and her death was very much the final straw that made Megumi give up entirely. Add to this the fact that Sukuna has also used his body to kill Megumi’s only remaining father figure and teacher Gojo and it is difficult to imagine Megumi regaining his fighting spirit any time soon.

As such, many fans have entertained the possibility of Megumi returning as an anti-hero or even initiating the merger with Tengen—a looming threat that has yet to properly unfold and whose consequences are still quite difficult to anticipate. On the other hand, fans have also speculated that Sukuna could inhabit Yuji yet again after being forced out of Megumi’s body which would certainly bring Yuji’s character full circle bringing him back to the path of self-sacrifice.

Nonetheless, Jujutsu Kaisen‘s epic climactic battle against Sukuna is finally gearing towards a standstill yet again, but it is still unclear whether this will be the end of the battle just yet. Gege Akutami may still have many twists and surprises in store, but hopefully, it may not be long until Megumi Fushiguro finally makes his long-awaited return, especially considering the countless sacrifices it has taken to save him.
