HBO’s Harry Potter TV remake is the perfect chance to settle one of the fandom’s longest-running debates. Since the series’ announcement, some have questioned whether a remake of Harry Potter is necessary. The books and movies are deeply loved staples in popular culture, and a remake could even risk significant damage to one or the other. A Harry Potter TV show will be expensive and take a decade to produce, all for a story that its primary audience already knows. However, it may be worth it just for the sake of ending an old argument.

As beloved as the Harry Potter movies are, there wasn’t nearly enough time for them to capture all the critical moments from the books. For this reason, a portion of the fandom has determined that only those who have read the books can call themselves fans. There’s simply far too much that movie audiences will have missed otherwise. Of course, books aren’t for everyone, and movie fans argue that they can still love the Wizarding World without them. It’s been book fans vs. movie fans for years, but HBO’s Harry Potter reboot can put a stop to the feud.

The Harry Potter Remake Will Bridge The Gap Between Book & Movie Fans

The Book Vs. Movie Debate Will No Longer Matter

HBO has teased that its upcoming Harry Potter TV show will be a book-faithful adaption, which means the big debate between book and movie fans can finally come to a close. The series should contain all the plotlines, characters, and subtleties that the movies cut, so those who aren’t big on reading can finally be more knowledgeable about the Wizarding World as a whole. Since this has been the primary argument for why movie-only fans can’t be considered true fans, there will be little left to argue about if they tune into the series. There will be the Harry Potter books, the Harry Potter movies, and the Harry Potter TV show to bridge the gap between them.

Could HBO’s Remake Damage The Legacy Of The Harry Potter Movies?

While the Harry Potter TV show can give screen audiences a chance to learn all that was previously exclusive to book fans, there could still be some problems. A new screen adaptation that goes much further than the movies risks damaging their legacy by making the films superficial in comparison. It’s heartbreaking to think that the beloved movies could be made obsolete, and therefore understandable that so many would say that there is no good reason to remake Harry Potter. However, the fact that the movies have remained popular for so long indicates this won’t be the case.

The Harry Potter movies are woefully short on canon details, but they are still widely loved even by book fans. They aren’t perfect, but they are a piece of many modern audiences’ childhoods and, therefore, have the nostalgia factor on their side. Stars like Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, and more are memorialized in the Harry Potter movie, and this, combined with the short-form convenience of film, is sure to keep audiences returning to them for years to come. If done right, the TV show has the potential to enhance the films—not replace them.

Why A Book-Faithful TV Remake Is The Best Next Move For The Harry Potter Franchise

The Wizarding World Needed To Go Back To Square One To Move Forward

Despite criticisms that the Harry Potter TV remake is needless, this is the most logical next step for the Wizarding World franchise. The film series concluded back in 2011, and overall, the world of Harry Potter has remained wildly profitable. The amusement park is going strong, merchandise still flies off the shelves, and the books themselves have found their way into the hands of new generations. However, new screen additions to the Wizarding World franchise, like the Fantastic Beasts movies, have failed to move Harry Potter forward.

For on-screen spinoffs like Fantastic Beasts to work, the on-screen worldbuilding must be pretty stable. Unfortunately, as beloved as the Harry Potter movies are, they failed to establish a strong foundation from which the Wizarding World could be built. The HBO TV remake can fix this. Once all the nuanced details of the books are brought to the screen and all fan types are on the same page, the way will be clear for the Harry Potter franchise to continue with other spinoffs. Overall, it will mean endless possibilities.

Harry Potter is HBO’s remake of the iconic Wizarding World film series that consisted of eight films between 2001 and 2011. Each season adapts a book from JK Rowling’s popular series and provides more book-accurate details than the movies did. Upon the announcement of the Harry Potter TV show, the series received harsh criticism for the involvement of Rowling and for many thinking a reboot was unnecessary.
