Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Annihilation 2099 #1! As is, Wolverine’s healing factor is one of the most unstoppable powers in the Marvel Universe, if not the most understated. While it certainly doesn’t place his power level on a cosmic scale, Wolverine’s healing factor still makes him practically invincible, empowering him to take on even the most terrifyingly powerful opponents. And now, that healing factor just got a massive upgrade with the Nova Force, giving Wolverine an all-new immunity.

In Annihilation 2099 #1 “The Last Nova” by Steve Orlando and Ibraim Roberson, it’s revealed that Wolverine is destined to become the last Nova in the Marvel Universe. At least, in a Marvel Universe, as this story takes place within the 2099 reality of the Marvel multiverse. Not only that, but Wolverine stands out as a decidedly unique version of Nova, as he took part in an experimental procedure that bonded the Nova Force to his very cells – a procedure he was perfect for given his healing factor.

The reason the Nova Corps proceeded with this experimental procedure was due to extenuating circumstances: the invasion of the Exo-Parasites. The bug-like invaders came from another dimension, and quickly began to consume everything they came into contact with across the universe. Even other Novas fell to the Exo-Parasites, which is why the Nova Corps decided to imbue the very cells of someone with the Nova Force, and Wolverine is the only one who successfully became a Nova through that process.

Wolverine’s Nova Upgrade Makes Him Immune to the Exo-Parasites

Wolverine in his Nova uniform standing over defeated alien foes.

As it turned out, the Nova Corps was absolutely right when they came up with the procedure that imbued Wolverine’s cells with the Nova Force, as it did make him immune to the Exo-Parasites. Unfortunately, Wolverine was the only Nova the Nova Corps was able to do this to before the Exo-Parasites effectively wiped them all out, leaving Wolverine as the last Nova.

Now, Wolverine is cursed to wander the universe, doing everything he can to bring order to a cosmos hellbent on falling into chaos. However, at least when it comes to the Exo-Parasites, Wolverine has a newfound immunity to them, meaning they are far less of a threat to him than they were to the greater Nova Corps, which only speaks to how immensely powerful Wolverine has become with this new upgrade.

Wolverine’s New Nova Form Didn’t Just Upgrade His Healing Factor

Wolverine blasting a symbiote to death with his cosmic Nova powers.

While it’s incredibly significant that Wolverine is now immune to one of the deadliest parasitic space creatures in the Marvel Universe thanks to a healing factor upgrade, his new Nova form did a great deal more than that. As Wolverine said himself in this issue, each one of his trillions of cells feels like tiny suns surging with immense power. That means Wolverine has access to the same powers that the classic Nova has always wielded, except Logan’s version of those powers are cranked up as far as they can go.

Wolverine isn’t just the last Nova, he’s also the most powerful, and his upgraded healing factor only scratches the surface of his immense strength. However, that doesn’t diminish its significance, as his healing factor has always been Wolverine’s most useful mutation, and it’s now offering him an all-new immunity against a cosmic threat – and it’s all thanks to the Nova Force.
