The prospect of Normal People returning for a season 2 receives a candid response from star Daisy Edgar-Jones. Based on the 2018 novel by Sally Rooney, the psychological drama was adapted into a miniseries for BBC Three and Hulu in 2020. Primarily written by Rooney and Alice Birch, the show followed the complicated relationship between high school students Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), as they navigate adulthood in their undergraduate years at Trinity College in Dublin. Nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards, Normal People received critical acclaim, amassed a loyal fan following and made stars out of leads Edgar-Jones and Mescal.

Now, speaking to BBC, Edgar-Jones reveals the chances of Normal People returning for a season 2. The actor, who has found fame beyond the series, including the upcoming release of Twisters, is not keen on shutting the door on a possible return of the popular season, though has one condition for potentially returning. Check out what she had to say below:

I love those characters. It would be wonderful to explore them again. If [Rooney] is up for writing a new story, who knows… Keeping it open. Always open.

Why Normal People Should Return

The Season 1 Finale Leaves the Future Hanging

As Edgar-Jones says, the series’ future depends on Rooney, who would need to write a new book or approve a TV storyline continuation. The Normal People season 1 finale was ambiguous and left much up for interpretation, having revolved around Connell’s impending decision to move to New York City to pursue his dream after being accepted into an MFA Creative Writing program. The ending left the future hanging for both Connell and Marianne, who overcame many challenges to be together but still couldn’t seem to get the timing right.

Hulu’s Normal People offers a beautiful and raw take on romance. If you can’t get enough of the show, you’ll want to check out these movies.

As Connell seemingly chooses to accept the opportunity overseas in the Normal People season 1 finale, it’s clear their relationship won’t have a happy ending just yet. Although the two love each other, their complicated emotional and psychological backgrounds make it difficult to be together and both need to grow on their own before they can come together again. Marianne struggles to overcome the trauma of her abusive childhood, and Connell struggles to communicate his feelings and be vulnerable with Marianne, caring about what people think. Both characters have a lot to work on individually before they can be in a healthy, happy relationship.

Normal People season 2 could pick up where season 1 left off, or it could be based further in the future, seeing the pair come together again. Given their complex timeline, a jump to the future would seem more appropriate if the two are going to have a chance of being together and making it work, and could then focus on how they are able to balance their careers with their relationships and love for each other. It’s all up to Rooney, but if she does decide to continue Normal People, its clear Edgar-Jones is ready to jump back in.
