As the Birds entered the portal to save team founder Barbara Gordon, Mari was unable to use her abilities in the new world they found themselves in. She struggles with her powerlessness in the face of the Jurassic-era creatures, leaving the team for some time alone to lock in with the Red and regain her power.

When the Birds have their backs against the wall with new villain Maia, Vixen returns and harnesses the power of seven pterodactyls.

Vixen’s superpower to channel the abilities of any animal makes her one of DC’s most versatile characters, and her new display of dino power further proves that. While the character is famous for using her power to take on the general abilities of basic animals to do her superheroics, there are underexplored levels to Vixen’s true potential as a total powerhouse in the current DC universe. With the character’s ability to tap into the morphogenetic field and the Red, she technically has no upper limit to what kind of animals she can channel, now including extinct creatures and superpowered humans.

In other DC continuities over the years, Vixen has taken on the abilities of a dragon, a triceratops, and her fellow Justice League members. Even in the mainstream DC Universe, Vixen’s incredible abilities are readily acknowledged, but not fully explored. Black Canary once removed Mari from the team because she had been siphoning team members’ powers and subsequently making them weaker. Vixen has been able to go toe-to-toe with characters as strong as Superman since her initial debut in Action Comics #521, making her one of the most powerful Justice League heroes.

An Underrated Justice League All-Star

Though her abilities make her one of their most powerful characters, Vixen has been somewhat underrated in DC’s premier team and universe overall. Despite being one of their strongest members, Vixen hasn’t been featured on a main JL lineup since Justice League of America’s relaunch in DC’s Rebirth era. She also hasn’t had a proper solo title outside a Webtoon exclusive since G. Willow Wilson’s Vixen: Return of the Lion from 2008-2009. The character should be getting more of a deserved spotlight, with her latest pterodactyl-powered save being Mari’s biggest moment since joining the Birds of Prey’s latest lineup.

Mari McCabe’s status as a member of multiple teams in the DC universe has sometimes relegated her to the sidelines, but her immense abilities make her deserving of a bigger spotlight. As she levels up with pterodactyl power, the possibilities of what she can do expand and make her even more worthy of a major spot on the Justice League, or any other leading role on a DC team. With her new display of power to save the Birds of Prey, Vixen’s dinosaur-channeling moment has proven her astonishing ability to be one of DC Comics’ biggest powerhouses moving forward.
