WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4, and Fire & Blood.

Vhagar might have killed a couple of beloved characters, but House of the Dragon’s most terrifying dragon has yet to be introduced. One of the biggest differences between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones is the number of dragons featured on the shows. Whereas Game of Thrones was set in an age where dragons had been gone for years, House of the Dragon takes place when the Targaryen ruled Westeros with fire and blood. House of the Dragon covers a particularly troubled period of House Targaryen’s history, the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4 makes it clear why it is called “The Dance of the Dragons.” The battle at Rook’s Rest saw Sunfyre, Meleys, and Vhagar all coming at each other, with Aemond’s dragon easily taking down her opponents. While Aemond attacking Aegon was a deviation from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the fact that Vhagar easily defeated Rhaenys’ dragon was hardly a surprise. Still, although Vhagar is older and larger than any dragon in House of the Dragon, she is arguably not the scariest one.

The Cannibal Is The Scariest Dragon In The Dance Of The Dragons

Cannibal eats other dragons (and not just in battles)

Cannibal, a dragon who earned his name because he eats other dragons, is one of the most menacing creatures in the ASOIAF universe. Cannibal was a wild dragon, meaning he had no rider and could not be controlled. Two other wild dragons were living on Dragonstone at that time – Sheepstealer and Grey Ghost – but Cannibal was by far the most dangerous. No Targaryen was brave, or foolish, enough to try to claim Cannibal as their dragon. Additionally, there was only so much those at Dragonstone could do to prevent Cannibal from eating other dragons.

Although House of the Dragon has seen dragons attacking dragons, Cannibal would eat others of his kind not just as part of a battle. This alone makes him the scariest of the dragons in House of the Dragon. He had no problem attacking humans either – Cannibal once ate a father and his sons who had failed to claim Sheepstealer. Not even one of the dragonseeds, Targaryen bastards who will soon be introduced in House of the Dragons, could claim Cannibal as their own. Funnily enough, Cannibal was barely involved in the war and survived the Dance of the Dragons.

Now that Rhaenyra has sent her first dragon to the war, things will only continue to escalate. Rhaenys and her dragon may have died, but Rhaenyra is now aware that she cannot win this war without bringing her most powerful weapons to the battlefield. The blacks will soon start to enlist “dragonseeds” in a desperate attempt to have enough dragonriders to ride all of the dragons that are still available in Dragonstone. This is when Cannibal will most likely be introduced in House of the Dragon, although no one will be able to claim this one.
