How To Watch the Marvel Movies In Order (By Release Date & In Order Of MCU Timeline Events)

Want to catch up before the next release, or just revisit the universe for a refresher? Here’s the order to watch the entire MCU timeline.

Captain America’s Elevator Fight Scene

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Even 10 years after it was initially released, Captain America: The Winter Soldier remains a fan-favorite film in the MCU. The movie features many bombshell reveals, such as Bucky’s identity as the Winter Soldier and Hydra’s corruption of S.H.I.E.L.D. getting exposed. The suspense in the espionage thriller is so well-crafted that the story still feels like a surprise even on a rewatch. While there are many genuinely brilliant moments in The Winter Soldier, one scene in particular stands out as a favorite to rewatch.

The elevator fight scene in The Winter Soldier is likely one of the first scenes that come to mind when thinking about the movie. After finding out about the corruption of S.H.I.E.L.D., Steve knows that the agents surrounding him in an elevator are actually Hydra undercover. After saying one of his coldest lines in MCU history, Captain America single-handedly takes down over 10 agents before jumping several stories down in a hasty escape. With well-choreographed fighting, brief moments of humor, and actual implications for the plot, this scene has it all.

The Portals Scene

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The portal scene in Avengers: Endgame was the payoff of over a decade of films. Endgame was bound to be a major event as it was the follow-up to Infinity War and the culmination of the MCU’s Infinity Saga. However, nothing could prepare fans for how epic the ultimate MCU team-up would end up being. Looking like all hope was lost, the Battle of Earth was set up with a chilling image of Steve Rogers standing alone versus Thanos’ army. As soon as Falcon’s voice is heard and the first portal appears, fans knew they were in for a treat.

With every portal that appeared, more and more of the MCU’s beloved heroes showed up. It was a reminder that the Avengers had actually successfully managed to undo the effects of the Snap and that the heroes were not just alive and well, but ready to fight. The scale of the moment is a lot to take in, and the sheer amount of heroes in Endgame‘s cast warrants a rewatch in itself just to make sure every character is noticed. Rewatching the “Avengers, assemble” moment will always remind fans of how big of a cinematic moment this film really was.

Captain America Wields Mjolnir

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

It’s hard to choose just one outstanding moment from Avengers: Endgame, and the film really warrants a rewatch in itself. Another unforgettable scene worth revisiting is undoubtedly the moment that Captain America wields Mjolnir, which is yet another moment that felt like years in the making. Moments before the portal scene, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor attempt to take on Thanos on their own. Just as things are starting to look dire, Mjolnir flies away from Thor and into the hands of Steve Rogers.

Why Thor Knew Captain America Was Worthy

One of the best moments of Avengers: Endgame was Captain America lifting Mjolnir, with Thor proclaiming that he knew the former was worthy.

MCU fans had theorized for a while that Captain America was worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Steve’s origin story stems from a place of genuine good, and he has always been considered the hero of the people. The biggest hint came in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Steve manages to shift Mjolnir ever so slightly. Besides just being a great character moment for Captain America, Steve wielding Mjolnir in Endgame finally confirmed the theory that he had been able to lift the hammer all along and paid off massive amounts of fan discussion with a truly epic reveal.

Tony Stark Sacrifices Himself For The Universe

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

In a full-circle moment for the character of Tony Stark, Endgame’s final act sees the beloved MCU icon sacrificing himself for the universe. Already losing Black Widow earlier on in the film, it was hard to guess whether the rest of the original Avengers would make it out of Endgame unscathed. The moment Doctor Strange confirms to Tony that there’s only one outcome where they win, fans could probably figure that Iron Man’s MCU fate was sealed.

Tony’s Endgame sacrifice covers a wide range of emotions for any invested fan. The moment starts off as incredibly epic with Tony’s one-liner referring back to his 2008 Iron Man reveal, then quickly turns into sorrow as soon as the aftermath is shown and the characters say goodbye to Tony. The emotional impact of Tony’s sacrifice makes it a hard scene to rewatch, but it is worth it to see how gracefully Marvel handled the exit of a core MCU character.

Tobey Maguire And Andrew Garfield Return As Spider-Man

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Spider-Man is the Marvel hero with the most live-action iterations over the past few decades, and it has been a huge dream for fans to see them all in the same room. The MCU’s Spider-Man films did a good job of establishing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as his own character separate from the past versions, so when the right time finally did come for a crossover thanks to the Multiverse Saga, Holland’s Spider-Man could stand on his own among two icons.

Even though fans heavily predicted that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would make cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the marketing in the months prior was able to throw people off. Rewatching the moment Garfield and Maguire’s Peter Parkers first walk into Ned’s living room still feels like a fresh surprise, as it’s unbelievable that Marvel actually pulled it off. For huge fans or even just anyone who has watched all three live-action versions of the hero, rewatching the No Way Home scene will always feel like a love letter to Spider-Man.

Loki Sits At The End Of Time

Loki Season 2 (2023)

There’s no question that Loki is one of the MCU’s most popular characters, which partially explains why the God of Mischief has been able to escape death so many times. Even when it looks like the end for him, Tom Hiddleston’s beloved version of Loki always finds a way back. Despite premiering after his initial Infinity War death, the Loki series makes complete sense as it is a past version of Loki existing in a separate timeline. The first season performed so well that it is one of the rare Disney+ MCU series that already has a second season.

Many regard Loki season 2 as some of the MCU’s strongest television episodes, and an emotional rewatch will always be the Loki season 2 ending when the character sacrifices himself. Finally destroying the Temporal Loom that was threatening the branched timelines, Loki chose to sit at the End Of Time and become the new living Temporal Loom for the Sacred Timeline. It is a beautiful scene to remember how far Loki has come as a character, but it is also visually stunning with the different branches growing to become a part of Loki.

The Iconic Avengers Group Shot That Started It All

The Avengers (2012)

The Avengers was the MCU’s first real test as to whether an interconnected franchise would perform well with viewers. After several movies spent introducing the key players, audiences got to see them collaborate in what would be the first of several Avengers films. Though some Avengers moments have aged better than others, rewatching the film will always fill MCU fans with nostalgia for how simple things were back in Phase 1.

The shot constantly used for promotion during The Avengers’ run was the Avengers group shot, and rightfully so. The moment is composed well as each hero gets a moment in the spotlight before coming together in an epic group stance. As the first major superhero collaboration of its time, the scene will always be a reminder of how big of a risk Marvel took with The Avengers. Although the moment only lasts for a few seconds, it is a scene that most MCU fans will never get tired of rewatching.

Wanda Maximoff Finally Becomes The Scarlet Witch

WandaVision (2021)

WandaVision has some of the most rewatchability out of any MCU project because of its unique take on sitcoms. The creative choice to have every episode cover a different decade has been one of Marvel’s most successful. Each episode can stand alone as its own to rewatch while still being connected by the greater plot, all to culminate in the final Westview showdown. The WandaVision finale contains some heartbreaking MCU moments, but it also has one of its most epic.

Even though Wanda Maximoff made her first MCU appearance back in 2014, she wasn’t officially name-dropped as the Scarlet Witch until WandaVision years later. The battle between Wanda and Agatha is always exciting to rewatch, as it never gets old seeing Wanda embrace her true destiny. Seeing her with her full powers in her official Scarlet Witch costume is a moment that fans will always come back to in honor of the Scarlet Witch’s MCU legacy.

Peter Realizes Liz’s Dad Is Vulture

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

While many MCU moments are rewatchable for the sheer grand scale of the scene, Spider-Man: Homecoming is an incredibly rewatchable film because of how grounded it is. The MCU’s official Spider-Man debut had to stand up to the past live-action iterations of the character, and Homecoming managed to nail Peter’s youthful energy. Peter had spent so much of Homecoming struggling to balance his new hero persona and his life as a teenager that the audience truly shared his joy when he was able to land a prom date with Liz.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Secretly Answered What Happened To Liz Toomes

Spider-Man: No Way Home secretly answered what happened to Laura Harrier’s Liz Toomes after Spider-Man: Homecoming and Peter Parker’s identity reveal.

Peter giddily approaching Liz’s house just to come face-to-face with the Vulture is an example of the MCU nailing comedic timing. The look of bewilderment on Peter’s face is sure to garner laughs every time, but the tension that builds in the following moments is what makes the scene. With the follow-up of Adrian Toomes driving the two teenagers to prom and seeing the exact moment he pieces together Peter’s true identity, this Homecoming scene is worth rewatching to catch every nuance in Holland and Keaton’s acting.

The Airport Battle

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

MCU fights are usually against an obvious villain, but Captain America: Civil War was one of the first MCU films to pit allies against each other. The film has incredible rewatch value, as even just taking the film in from each hero’s perspective offers a different viewing experience. However, the scene that fans always come back to in Civil War is undoubtedly the grand-scale airport battle between the Avengers. Viewers will always want to see their heroes fight alongside each other, but there’s something about watching them fight against each other that evokes a new type of excitement.

Getting to see which Avengers were on whose side and having all of their powers showcased in one place never gets old. Even with so many players on the field, Civil War’s airport battle never feels messy or misdirected. The battle also introduces Black Panther and Spider-Man, which many Marvel fans surely love to go back to as they are two beloved characters. Any MCU scene where the viewer can focus on something different every time is always a scene worth rewatching, and Civil War’s airport battle does just that with how much it’s able to pack into one fight.
