In the wake of Yellowstone‘s series finale, co-creator Taylor Sheridan will follow up the neo-Western with yet another genre entry: Landman. Set within the world of oil rigs in West Texas, Sheridan’s latest Western will continue an exciting career trend for Jon Hamm, who joins the cast of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman alongside fellow greats, including Demi Moore (G.I. Jane), Ali Larter (Crazy), and Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo, 1883). Although few details have been released, the series will chronicle the stories of both roughnecks laboring on Texas’ oil fields and the ruthless billionaires who benefit from their work.

Much like Sheridan’s storied Yellowstone series and its spinoffs, Landman has plenty of threads to tackle, as the oil boom at the show’s center shapes the nation’s climate, economy, and even geopolitics. The ensemble show will follow the fraught and long-standing relationship between Tommy Norris (Thornton), a crisis executive at an oil company, and Monty Miller (Hamm), an oil industry titan. Slated for a two-episode premiere on November 17, 2024, Landman‘s 10-episode first season is sure to help fill the void left by Yellowstone season 5, part 2’s conclusion, all while continuing a great pattern for Hamm.

Landman Creates A Jon Hamm Westerns Trend After Fargo Season 5

The Emmy-Winning Actor Seems At Home In The Genre

Jon Hamm’s role as a billionaire oil tycoon comes on the heels of his impressive turn in Fargo season 5. Based on the 1996 Oscar-winning Coen brothers’ movie, the five-season Fargo series is a black-comedy-meets-crime-drama anthology, but the show’s fifth installment definitely leaned into the tropes of the Western genre in terms of its characters, design, and feel. Fargo season 5 follows Dorothy “Dot” Lyon (Juno Temple), an apparent Midwestern homemaker who’s actually hiding a mysterious past. That history returns to haunt her in the form of Jon Hamm’s sheriff, Roy Tillman.

Although he serves as the constitutional sheriff of Stark County, North Dakota, Tillman is also a corrupt rancher with abusive tendencies. In short, Hamm’s Roy Tillman is the embodiment of an incredibly toxic cowpoke. For his outstanding performance in Fargo season 5, Hamm was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe. Needless to say, the news of Hamm’s upcoming role in Sheridan’s latest Western is incredibly exciting. Once again, the Mad Men actor will don a cowboy hat, a ruthless demeanor, and some riding boots as he fully enters his Western era.

Fargo Season 5 Sets A High Bar For Jon Hamm’s Landman Role

Jon Hamm Gave A Standout Performance In The Latest Installment Of Fargo

With offbeat humor and inimitable violence, Fargo season 5 is one of the anthology series’ best installments. A huge part of Fargo‘s success is thanks to Hamm’s standout performance, which means Taylor Sheridan’s new TV show has a high bar to meet as viewers compare it to Hamm’s recent Western-adjacent hit. Still, the odds are good. Although Sheridan’s series outside of Yellowstone have faltered a bit Special Ops: Lioness and Mayor of Kingstown are prime examples — Landman seems to be right in the TV show creator’s wheelhouse. And, after Fargo, it’s certainly in Jon Hamm’s wheelhouse too.
