The Boys season 4 nearing its conclusion, and while Laz Alonso has an exciting series ending pitch for season 5, it faces one unfortunate issue. Laz Alonso has been a major part of The Boys since its very first season, with his role as MM giving the central characters a much-needed moral compass. Season 4 has elevated his role as the character now leads the group and directly works with the CIA, but MM’s panic attack in The Boys episode 6 proves how stressful the plot is getting as the series approaches its final season.

With the confirmation that The Boys season 5 will end the critically acclaimed superhero show, theories have already begun to emerge about how the series will conclude. Butcher’s current storyline hints at The Boys season 5 potentially replicating the controversial comic ending, but there are still plenty of interesting ways the show could wrap up. Among the numerous discussions about character fates and season 5’s overall plot, Laz Alonso pitched a unique ending idea. His proposal has a lot of potential and would be thrilling; however, it also risks hurting The Boys‘ fifth and final season.

Laz Alonso Wants The Boys Season 5 To End On A Cliffhanger To Set Up A Movie

Alonso Pitched The Idea Of A Feature Length Movie Ending The Boys’ Main Story

In a recent interview (via Josh Horowitz), Laz Alonso revealed he had been pushing for The Boys season 5 to end in a cliffhanger which would be resolved in a movie. At around 45:10, Alonso tells Horowitz, “I’ve been unsuccessfully pitching that we end the show with a feature film to Eric.” The actor further elaborated by claiming that he wanted season 5 to end on a cliffhanger before announcing the movie “that we’ve been filming since the beginning of the series“, which would be an incredibly unique way to conclude one of the most popular ongoing shows on TV.

Anthony Starr questioned Laz Alonso’s The Boys season 5 ending plan by asking if the movie would be released in theaters. After Alonso confirmed that’s what he had in mind, Starr claimed he was on board. Based on Alonso’s comments, it seems like he has been passionately pitching this idea for some time, as he even jokingly encouraged the audience to tweet Eric Kripke about the concept. Ending with a movie would undoubtedly be a bizarre yet exciting way for The Boys to finish its main story, but while it sounds great, season 5 could suffer as a result.

The Boys Ending With A Movie Would Be Incredible (But It Would Hurt Season 5)

While The Boys Hitting The Big Screen Sounds Great, Season 5 Would Suffer As A Result

While The Boys movie sounds amazing, it is hard to ignore the ramifications it would have for season 5. Bringing The Boys to the big screen for the first time would add a completely new dynamic to the franchise and allow the creators to be even bolder. A movie budget would also provide some of The Boys‘ most graphic moments yet while adding to the story’s intensity. This would make the conclusion a must-see spectacle, as The Boys has all the potential to perform well at the box office, but it would potentially have an unexpected consequence.

If The Boys opted to announce the movie in advance, people would be far less invested in season 5 as it would be obvious the main story isn’t over. The stakes would instantly be lowered as some central characters would have to survive so they can carry the film, meaning The Boys season 5 would lack the jeopardy of a traditional final season. Although the series has played it safe with its main characters so far, their survival has been pivotal to the story. However, knowing they’d likely survive the final outing, as well, completely undoes the four seasons of build-up.

The Boys season 5’s announcement already made season 4 weaker as viewers expected most characters to survive and early episodes felt like a transitional season, which damaged the show’s audience score early on. Therefore, revealing a movie before season 5 would be a bad idea. On the flip side, if the franchise didn’t announce the film ahead of season 5, fans would be furious at the cliffhanger, and a feature-length movie announcement could feel like a cheap cash grab. Rather than simply finishing with season 5, the franchise extending its ending into a movie after producing several spinoffs could alienate viewers and ruin The Boys‘ strong reputation.

The Boys Could Still Make A Movie Work, Even If Season 5 Ends The Main Show

The Franchise Has Plenty Of Potential Movie Options That Don’t Require Season 5’s Cliffhanger Ending

Ending with a cliffhanger could be risky, but The Boys could still make a movie work if season 5 ends the main show. With just one season to go, the series is teasing Butcher’s comic ending happening in The Boys season 5, meaning the show will have to incorporate two key storylines. The protagonists still have to take down Homelander before the Butcher vs The Boys story can begin, meaning one of these aspects may be condensed. However, a movie would allow season 5 to focus solely on killing Homelander, while the film could include The Boys vs Butcher storyline.

This would avoid the necessity for a cliffhanger and could give the show a somewhat uplifting ending, allowing the movie to incorporate The Boys‘ most heartbreaking story. Even if season 5 includes the Butcher plot, Prime Video’s version of the franchise is completely different from the comics, meaning a movie could follow the surviving characters on a new journey. Likewise, The Boys film could focus on one of the spinoffs instead or introduce a completely new set of characters, proving there is plenty of big screen potential, regardless of how The Boys season 5 ends.
