Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #2Deadpool has officially “cured” his immortality, but it comes with a horrifying opposite to his healing factor. While Deadpool’s known for his outrageous quips and fourth-wall breaks, his greatest power comes from his healing factor. It prevents him from succumbing to his cancer, while also making him essentially immortal. However, he’s now found a way to reverse the effect, and it’s absolutely terrifying.

In Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #2 – written by Joe Kelly, with art by Adam Kubert –Deadpool and Wolverine cross the snowy Siberian tundra after escaping from Delta and the Watchers. With Deadpool slowly returning to his usual self following a fight with Wolverine, he explains that the organization found a way to reverse his immortality.

That said, it didn’t come from removing the healing factor, which Deadpool deemed a “lost cause.” Rather, Delta supercharged his cancer to make it grow faster than his healing factor could handle, making him mortal.

Deadpool giving a thumbs up with the Living Tribunal and Eternity behind him.

Deadpool Reverses His Healing Factor, Officially Becoming Mortal (In The Most Horrifying Way)

Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #2 – Written By Joe Kelly, Art By Adam Kubert; Color By Frank Martin; Lettering By Joe Sabino

In Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #2, Deadpool has made an absolutely horrific choice, given his cancer was the reason why he sought out the Weapon X program. Now, he’s officially letting what started his story finish the job. What’s interesting about Deadpool’s choice to reverse his healing factor is his reasoning behind it. He’s constantly been shown to be a hero that’s more than just a funny character. Even his jokes have been revealed to have a tragic meaning behind them. However, his choice to become mortal comes entirely from looking back on the mistakes he made over the years.

Deadpool tells Wolverine that he's afraid he'll be remembered for the worst things he did if he really dies.

Deadpool expresses to Wolverine that “the worst parts…are gonna live forever,” even if he never dies. With this in mind, his decision to become mortal comes entirely from him wanting to pressure himself to do better. By living with the fear of death hanging over him, it’s a way for him to focus on doing things right and making the best of the time he has left. It’s an incredibly extreme way for him to ensure he dies with a good legacy. However, his heart is certainly in the right place to do good things with what little time he has.

Deadpool Immediately Realizes He Made A Mistake By Forsaking His Healing Factor

Wolverine Is His Last Hope

Deadpool tells Wolverine he admires his humanity, despite the tragedies he's experienced.

Of course, if Deadpool had really wanted to stay mortal following his alteration, he would have ultimately cut ties with his superhero allies to live quietly in peace. However, his call to Wolverine shows that he realizes what he did was a mistake. Delta is clearly manipulating him into only focusing on the bad things in his life, but he’s done even more good than bad. He’s raised many superpowered children that he’s formed bonds with, especially his daughter Ellie. He’s also become an antihero following his introduction as a villain.

It’s clear he’s realized this after the procedure was completed, and calling out to Wolverine was his last lifeline to help him. Whether this is the end of the line for the Merc with a Mouth or not, it will be interesting to see how Deadpool navigates mortality, especially with his cancer slowly eating away at him, as indicated throughout the issue. It’s a horrifying way for him to “cure” his immortality, but with Wolverine by his side, Deadpool could find new meaning in himself as he realizes what he misses about his healing factor.
