Dead Boy Detectives‘ Tragic Mick actor Michael Beach addresses the possibility of a season 2 return. The supernatural horror show’s first season has earned stellar reviews since its Netflix debut. Taking place in The Sandman universe, it follows Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), two deceased boys who help solve supernatural cases while dodging the afterlife and Death (Kirby). Given that Dead Boy Detectives season 1 ends with the detective agency still running and a surprise twist regarding one character’s fate, many viewers have been curious whether the story will continue in another season.

In an interview with Screen Rant to promote Mayor of Kingstown season 3, Beach opened up about the chances of Dead Boy Detectives season 2. Beach explained he didn’t know anything about season 2’s potential renewal and was leaving that in the hands of the executives. However, he expressed willingness to return to the role of Tragic Mick, as it’s not often he portrays a character as unique as a walrus-turned-human. The actor also mused about what Tragic Mick’s home life and apartment might look like in a potential second season. Check out his statement below:

You know what, I don’t know anything about that. I let that get worked out by people who are much smarter than I am. I would love to go back because he’s such a unique, interesting character and the idea of playing a man who used to be a walrus and who was doing everything he can to get back to that, it was a lot of fun. For me, the kind of stuff I normally do, it was a unique experience.

I wouldn’t mind actually going home with him and seeing what his home life is. And obviously, his name is Tragic Mick, so it’s not like he’s going to go home and turn on some TV and start laughing, but I would really like to see him at home and get to get a little bit more in depth as to why he, hates is a strong word, but why he longs to go back to the sea and how obviously I would assume that he lives by himself, that he has nothing, that he’s just…

It’s almost like there’s a mini-place in his apartment, I assume he’d have an apartment, like his shop, where he has all these other potions and concoctions. Because that’s why his shop exists, because for the last 200 years he’s been trying to find a way to reverse the spell that was put on him so that he could become a walrus again and join his family in the sea. So I can imagine that everywhere you go in his apartment, there are these other things that he hasn’t quite put in his shop yet because they haven’t been tested or whatever. And it just, something about that I think would really give you more insight into the character.

Tragic Mick Is a Big Part of Why Dead Boy Detectives Should Continue

While Beach didn’t have a concrete update on Dead Boy Detectives season 2, his statement did demonstrate why the show should continue. As he mused about what his character might do upon returning, he demonstrated how Tragic Mick is an excellent example of the unresolved story arcs and unfinished character development that deserves a season 2. In the first season, Tragic Mick is just a minor character. However, the fact that he stirred such fascination from viewers and Beach, despite his minor role, is a testimony to how adept the show was at creating likable characters.

Dead Boy Detectives revolves around the theme of unfinished business, as Edwin and Charles try to help ghosts resolve whatever conflict is keeping them from the afterlife. Tragic Mick uniquely displays this theme, as he’s not deceased, but instead is a man who was once a walrus. As a walrus, he longed to be a human until the goddess Sedna granted him his wish one day. Now, his unfinished business is his constant longing to reverse his wish and return to the ocean, though viewers are left wondering why he regrets his wish so much.

Dead Boy Detectives’ finale has left many unanswered questions about what really happened to Dead Boy Detective Agency member, Niko Sasaki.

Additionally, the show works Inuit mythology into Tragic Mick with its inclusion of Sedna, who may be connected to the magical bear totem he gave Niko (Yuyu Kitamura). So much history, mythology, and emotion was packed into him that viewers are interested in seeing his story continue. The careful storytelling, character development, and paranormal elements are present throughout the whole show, which is part of the reasons viewers have already been circulating #RenewDeadBoyDetectives on social media. It remains to be seen if Netflix renews Dead Boy Detectives, but characters like Tragic Mick provide a compelling reason to do so.
