The only movie you need to watch before seeing Glen Powell in Twisters is currently streaming on Max. The newly released Rotten Tomatoes score of Twisters is a positive sign for the upcoming blockbuster, which will hopefully become one of the biggest box office showings of summer 2024. As a sequel to the 1996 box office hit Twister starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, the disaster movie will feature a new cast led by Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

There are lots of exciting things to expect from Twisters, which will mark Powell’s first major summer blockbuster release since 2022’s iconic Top Gun: Maverick. Twisters has an estimated budget of $200 million and will likely need to outperform the original’s box office performance of nearly $500 million to turn a profit, considering marketing and other promotional fees. The film is directed by Lee Issac Chung of Minari acclaim, adding another positive to the film’s expected box office performance.

The 1996 Original Twister Movie Is Currently Trending On Max

It comes right in time for the upcoming release of Twisters

The original 1996 classic disaster blockbuster Twister is currently streaming on Max. While it’s not necessarily required viewing before heading to your nearest theater to see Twisters, it does provide some helpful background for what to expect from Twisters, which is sure to feature even more heart-pumping visual effects and action sequences. The original Twister was mostly well-received by critics, earning a positive Rotten Tomatoes score of 63%.

For its time, Twister displayed some of the most impressive and realistic visual effects put on the big screen. While its screenplay certainly isn’t its strongest quality, the star-studded cast, which also features a young Philip Seymour Hoffman and Alan Ruck, is an entertaining bunch. Twister became the second highest-grossing movie of 1996 domestically following Independence Day, earning roughly $242 million and just under $496 million worldwide.

The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 disaster film Twister premieres in the summer of 2024, and the early reviews for Twisters are optimistic.

How Glen Powell’s Twisters Connects To The 1996 Movie

Twisters has many nods to the 1996 original

Twisters takes great influence from the original film as it more or less shares the same premise. It features much more advanced storm-chasing technology since it is set in the present day but still features the original Dorothy device from the first Twister film. Kate Cooper, played by Edgar-Jones in Twisters, is a meteorologist dealing with past trauma, much like Helen Hunt’s Jo Harding from the original. Additionally, Powell takes the front seat as “The Tornado Wrangler” who has amassed a following on the internet. Rewatching Twister on Max before Twisters sounds like the best way to prepare for the upcoming film.
