Sausage Party: Foodtopia is set after the events of Sausage Party, with the food having learned the truth about the Great Beyond. Following this revolution, they are attempting to establish a safe haven for themselves and the other food, which they dub Foodtopia. Foodtopia would be a place where all food could be safe to exist without the fear of humanity devouring them.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia expands on the lore and the world first established in the animated movie with the same sense of dark humor and stylized animation. Creator and star Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, and Edward Norton all reprise their roles from the original movie. Comedy stars Sam Richardson and Will Forte also join the cast as all-new characters in the world of Sausage Party.

Rogen explained how his television experience with series including The Boys helped inspire them to expand the Sausage Party story with television. He also shared why a long-running story was the perfect way to further expand on the worldbuilding first established in Sausage Party.

Seth Rogen: Yes, we always joked around about what would happen if they killed the humans and became the prevalent species on earth basically. That seemed funny to us. Is food a species? Yes, it is in our world. This idea, we had started to just do more and more television shows. We did Future Man with Kyle and Ariel and we had done The Boys and a few other shows, and we just started to honestly really like the freedom and the world building we could do with a very serialized television show. That became the goal was to turn it into a long running television show.

Kristen, you’re back as Brenda. Can you talk about how Brenda and Frank have evolved?

Kristen Wiig: I don’t know if they’ve evolved.

Seth Rogen: No, very little has changed.

Kristen Wiig: Obviously she’s a very fun character for me to play and it was easy. Doing this show is you get to work with really great people and the scripts are really funny and the actual recording is super fun. So I don’t know. It was an easy yes. It is just a fun thing to be part of and we get to record together sometimes.

Seth Rogen: We record a lot of our stuff together. Yeah, it was very fun.

Sam, you were new to this franchise. Talk to me about Julius the Orange. What was your initial reaction to Julius the Orange and also your initial experience with the original Sausage Party movie?

Sam Richardson: I saw the original Sausage Party movie in theater, and I loved it. I laughed out loud at least twice. [all laugh]

Seth Rogen: There’s only two jokes

Sam Richardson: Had to be like, “Hey, that’s funny.” No, I really loved it. So when I got the, I say call, but in real it was an email to join I was so excited to do it. And then to get to play Julius this orange who’s just like a big, who’s got a big orange butthole, I was excited. It is the only reaction.

The cast also joked about the weirdness of having to make sex noises in the booth while voice acting. Rogen revealed that Wiig found a way to approach it with a fun “elevated take” which Wiig described as “operatic.”

Seth Rogen: You’re not the first person to ask.

Kristen Wiig: Cause it’s about the character.

Seth Rogen: Yeah. No, at times it gets too real. You’re just like, Oh, these are just the noises that you make when you’re having sex. Wiig found a good, yeah, you have a good elevated take on it, I think. You put more work into, put a character work into

Kristen Wiig: She’s more like she’s singing a little more. She’s a little more operatic. I guess.

Speaking of elevated takes, I’ve always wanted to ask you this, Seth, because I partake in the house plant, if you will. If you were ever to pair house houseplant with Foodtopia, which strain would you pair to watch this with?

Seth Rogen: Oh, that’s a personal preference. I think a good sativa, any good sativa strain will get you. There’s eight episodes. Eight episodes. So yeah, I think, if you want to watch ’em all in one sitting. A good, strong Sativa strain. A Jack Herer maybe something like that.

Sam Richardson: The pairing menu.

If you guys weren’t playing the foods that you play in the series, depending on what you eat, what food would you be in the Foodtopia? Based on your personalities and you?

Kristen Wiig: Basically, what food would we be? That you’re most like, okay.

Seth Rogen: You’re nuts.

Kristen Wiig: Okay, guess I’ll go with that. Just like a salted peanut.

Seth Rogen: Yeah, something semetic. I would say something in that kosher section. Some matza that’s sitting there for 10 months of the year and you walk past it and you’re like, Who’s buying Matza in f-cking July? Are they still selling this sh-t? Sitting there for six months?

Sam Richardson: Probably some sort of candy bar or like a cookie, like a chocolate chip cookie salted.
