I’m hoping for big things from Star Trek at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Star Trek returns to Hall H with a 90-minute Star Trek Universe panel on Saturday, July 27th. Star Trek on Paramount+ is presenting three series; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the newest Star Trek show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, as well as Star Trek: Section 31, the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie on Paramount+. Star Trek: Prodigy is also receiving their own dedicated panel on Sunday, July 28th.
A year ago, Star Trek actors and writers were on strike, as was the entire entertainment industry. Star Trek on Paramount+ held a Hall H presentation hosted by Scott Mantz anyway, where they showed the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks. This year, Star Trek is back in full swing amid some major upheavals, like the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery, as well as the announcement that Star Trek: Lower Decks is also ending. Yet Star Trek at San Diego Comic-Con is also rife with exciting potential about the next phase of the franchise’s future. Here’s what I’m excited to learn about from Star Trek at Comic-Con.

Star Trek: Discovery is over, and soon Lower Decks will end, but even with fewer shows, there is still lots of exciting stuff ahead for Star Trek.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Will we get a release date and Strange New Worlds season 3 footage?
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be a huge part of Paramount+’s Star Trek Universe panel on Saturday, July 7th. The announced special guests from Strange New Worlds are Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Number One), and Ethan Peck (Lt. Spock), alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman, and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers.
I’m hoping for Paramount+ to announce the release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which wrapped filming in May. A Strange New Worlds season 3 trailer or any footage would be awesome to whet the appetite for the long-awaited new season. It would also be great to get some hints about what “big swings” are in store for Strange New Worlds season 3; like perhaps more info on the “Hollywood murder mystery” episode directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek: Lower Decks
It’s Lower Decks’ final season, unfortunately.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will be part of the Star Trek Universe Hall H panel. The USS Cerritos is beaming in Lower Decks cast members Jack Quaid (Lt. Brad Boimler), Tawny Newsome (Lt. Beckett Mariner), Noël Wells (Lt. D’Vana Tendi), and Jerry O’Connell (Commander Jack Ransom), along with creator and executive producer Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman.
It will be bittersweet for Star Trek: Lower Decks since season 5 is also their final season. But I expect to learn the fall release date for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, and I’m sure we’ll see a trailer for the final season. Key art and hints about Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 are also likely. Tawny, Jack, Noël, Jerry, and Mike McMahan are also genuinely funny in person, and the Lower Decks section of the Star Trek Universe panel is bound to be hilarious like the show itself.

Star Trek: Section 31
It’s time to raise the curtain on Section 31
Star Trek: Section 31 will get the spotlight at Comic-Con’s Star Trek Universe Hall H panel. Section 31‘s cast members Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, and Kacey Rohl, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman and director Olatunde Osunsanmi, will be part of the panel. While it’s disappointing Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh isn’t slated to appear, maybe she will deliver a video greeting.

I Have A Star Trek Theory About What Michelle Yeoh Is Really Doing In Section 31
The characters’ identities in Star Trek: Section 31 are top secret, but Rachel Garrett may be a clue to Emperor Georgiou’s plan in the Star Trek movie
I hope some of the mysteries about Star Trek: Section 31 will be answered, starting with the premiere date for the movie on Paramount+. I also hope to see Star Trek: Section 31‘s trailer. It would also be great to learn who Omari Hardwick and Sam Richardson are playing, since the only character known besides Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou is Rachel Garrett, who is Kacey Rohl’s character.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
School is finally in session
Fans will finally get more information about the next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, at Comic-Con. Opening the doors to Starfleet Academy are executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. It’s too bad series lead Holly Hunter, who plays Starfleet Academy’s Chancellor, and Paul Giamatti, who plays the show’s recurring main villain. won’t be at the Star Trek Universe panel, however.
Paramount+ and CBS Studios already announced the first three new cast members, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, and George Hawkins, but I hope Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reveals their characters’ names and/or species. I also would really like to know the identities of Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti’s characters. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy doesn’t start filming until the fall, but I’d love to see the concept art of the largest set ever built for Star Trek.

Star Trek: Prodigy
C’mon, season 3!
Star Trek: Prodigy is getting its own dedicated San Diego Comic-Con panel on Sunday, June 28th. Celebrating the successful launch of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 on Netflix are cast members Kate Mulgrew (Admiral Kathryn Janeway/Hologram Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal R’El), and executive producers and series creators Kevin and Dan Hageman.
Of course, the biggest announcement I’m hoping for is that Netflix has renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for season 3. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 ended with an ideal setup for the new adventures of the Protostar Class USS Prodigy, and possible news that Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is a go would be a cause for celebration. But I’m also expecting cool behind-the-scenes stories about making Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 from Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, and the Hageman brothers.

Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie & Star Trek 4
A new Star Trek movie in theaters? I’ll believe it when I see it.
The theatrical side of Star Trek is the purview of Paramount Pictures, so the Star Trek movies (other than Star Trek: Section 31) will not be part of Paramount+’s Star Trek Universe Hall H panel. Still, San Diego Comic-Con is the ideal place for Paramount to make some sort of announcement about the upcoming Star Trek movies. Toby Haynes’ Untitled Star Trek Origin movie is reportedly going to start filming in the fall, and I hope some information about this mysterious film will drop at Comic-Con.
That goes double for the long-delayed Star Trek 4, which is supposedly getting a new script by screenwriter Steve Yockey. Audiences are probably more interested in seeing Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reunite the cast of the USS Enterprise in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek alternate reality, but that feels like wishful thinking. Still, it would be great to come away from San Diego Comic-Con as excited about the future of Star Trek‘s movies as I am about what’s coming up next for Star Trek on Paramount+.
