The newly annoucned sequel to 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada can finally mark a career first for celebrated actress Meryl Streep. The long-awaited The Devil Wears Prada 2 is confirmed to be in development after being rumored and speculated on for quite some time. As of July 2024, all the original stars of The Devil Wears Prada stars are in talks to return for the hotly anticipated sequel as well as the original director, David Frankel, and producer, Wendy Finerman.

Key cast members of The Devil Wears Prada Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt are all expected to return in the sequel, which is really the only way it could have happened in the first place. The sequel is currently in development at Disney and is also expected to see the return of Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter of the original film. Streep earned one of her 21 Oscar nominations for her legendary role of Miranda Priestly.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Can Be Meryl Streak’s First Proper Movie Sequel Return

Her brief cameo in Mamma Mia 2 hardly counts

Streep’s anticipated return as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2 could finally become the first proper sequel of her nearly 50-year career. While she was technically in Mamma Mia 2, it was little more than a cameo and nothing as prominent as her role in the original Mamma Mia. You can’t put Miranda Priestly in the backseat for a Devil Wears Prada sequel, indicating that she is set to play a big part if the movie comes to fruition.

The original Devil Wears Prada was a massive box office hit in 2006, earning just under $327 million worldwide against a production budget of only $40 million and becoming the twelfth highest-grossing film of the year. With margins like these, it’s no surprise that Disney would want to invest in a modern sequel while they still have the chance. With Blunt and Hathaway becoming highly accomplished in their own right, the Devil Wears Prada sequel should be another box office smash.

Streep’s performance as Miranda Priestly is undoubtedly one of her most recognizable roles that has maintained its impact throughout the years following its release. On several occasions, particularly at live events and awards ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, Streep has slipped into that Miranda Priestly face and continued her legacy. Even if it’s only for just a moment, it’s gold every time. While a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada feels long overdue, it sounds very promising at its current stage.
