The first Captain America: Brave New World trailer is out now, and Marvel has confirmed a major change to a controversial character. Unorthodox star Shira Haas’ casting in the upcoming Captain America sequel was announced in September 2022, with subsequent details confirming her character to be “Ruth” after speculation that she would be playing Israeli superhero Sabra.

In the wake of that casting, concerns arose around the inclusion of the Marvel mutant, who serves as a Mossad agent in the comics. This followed similar controversy around the character in Marvel Comics. After comments to Variety in 2022 promising a different take on Sabra’s origin, Marvel.com’s official trailer release announcement confirms that she has been reimagined as a former Black Widow:

“New to the cast is Shira Haas, who joins as Ruth Bat-Seraph. A former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross. Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Xosha Roquemore also star.”
