This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 introduced a surprising new romance between a Vulcan and a Medusan, and they quickly became my favorite new Star Trek couple. Following the ragtag young crew of the USS Protostar, Prodigy season 1 sent Dal R’El (Brett Gray) and his friends on numerous adventures under the tutelage of a holographic version of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Meanwhile, the real Admiral Janeway eventually caught up with the missing Protostar and ultimately helped its young crew save Starfleet.

In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, some new faces join the former Protostar crew members for their new adventures, which involve time travel, universe jumping, and the return of iconic Star Trek characters. Since their introduction in Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, I have always found the non-corporeal Medusan, Zero (Angus Imrie), to be one of the show’s most fascinating characters. Despite acquiring an upgraded body from the engineers at Starfleet, Zero still longs for the ability to experience true physical sensation. Not only does Zero get this chance in Prodigy season 2, but they also meet a potential new love interest in the Vulcan Starfleet cadet, Maj’el (Michaela Dietz).

Maj’el & Zero’s Star Trek: Prodigy Romance Is Adorable

Despite their differences, Maj’el & Zero work well as a couple.

When Maj’el and her Nova Squadron teammates are introduced in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s two-part premiere, I wasn’t sure how to feel about these Starfleet cadets. However, after Maj’el inadvertently gets caught up in the journey to future Solum with Dal, Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), and Zero, the young Vulcan began to grow on me as a character. As Maj’el and Zero’s burgeoning romance blossomed, the odd pair quickly became one of my favorite new Star Trek couples. Every interaction between Maj’el and Zero is adorable, in the way only two logical beings who refuse to openly admit their obvious feelings for one another can be.

Maj’el and Zero don’t even need to speak their feelings out loud, as they appear to be on the same page from the beginning. When Maj’el tells Zero that they are “the most logical in your group of misfits,” Zero grows adorably flustered and is unable to form a response. Later, after Zero has acquired a temporary corporeal body, Maj’el unreservedly lays her hand on Zero’s face after inadvertently landing in their lap. I love the way their relationship builds throughout Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, even though they never explicitly state their feelings.

Maj’el Is A Wonderful Addition To The Cast Of Star Trek: Prodigy

Maj’el defies Vulcan stereotypes in the best way.

Vulcans have always been one of my favorite Star Trek aliens, and Maj’el not only offers an interesting glimpse into life as a teenage Vulcan, but also adds depth to the species often depicted as emotionless. Like many Vulcans, Maj’el is obviously intelligent, but she is also empathetic, likable, and even sometimes funny. Being so young, Maj’el has not yet achieved the rigid adherence to logic that many older Vulcans have. This works in her favor, as she can’t help but get caught up in the excitement of the Protostar crew’s adventures.

Even the most rigid Vulcans are not truly emotionless, but they have learned to maintain tight control over their feelings and always think before they act. Maj’el, however, reacts more like a teenager, jumping in to help her new friends even at the risk of her own career or even her life. She maintains a strong sense of morals, realizing that the Protostar crew members are good kids trying to do the right thing. Maj’el fits in well with the big personalities of Star Trek: Prodigy, and her unconventional relationship with Zero makes both characters even more compelling.

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.
