While Deadpool & Wolverine marks Deadpool’s debut in the MCU, Ryan Reynolds has made it clear that the film has not been made with sequels and future setups in mind. After two mainline films, a PG-13 edit of Deadpool 2, and now one of the most anticipated duos from the X-Men universe of all time, Deadpool’s story may be reaching a natural stopping point with Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie is set to break down the walls between the Fox X-Men timelines and see Deadpool join the main MCU timeline, but where he goes from there is unclear.

Despite finally joining the MCU, when Reynolds was asked if the movie will set up future sequels, to which he emphatically responded that “Deadpool is not a commercial for another movie.” This may come as a disappointment to fans who were hoping to see the character star in several more films under the MCU banner, but it doesn’t mean the story is over for Deadpool. With massive crossover events coming, such as Avengers: Secret Wars, anything is possible, but it appears that Deadpool & Wolverine will likely close the book on the series that starred Deadpool as the solo lead.

Why Deadpool & Wolverine Is Better Off Not Focusing On Potential Future Sequels Or MCU Future Possibilities

It Needs To Focus On Its Own Story

While the end of the trilogy may be a sad moment for fans of the Merc with the Mouth, it will likely lead to a much better film in Deadpool & Wolverine. When films get weighed down with too many conditions, and they have the job of setting up sequels, it can be easy for the film to lose its identity and start to feel like its simply building a foundation for the next thing. Deadpool has so far managed to deliver two great movies, with his hero origin, and his work alongside Cable to prevent a boy from becoming a murderous tyrant.

If Deadpool & Wolverine was designed primarily to ring in other stories for the MCU, introduce other characters, and spend the entire screen time simply filling in blanks, it wouldn’t leave room for the two leads to interact. This movie and the connection between Reynolds and Hugh Jackman needs room to explore the characters and their connection. Adding in other details to simply set up sequels would likely result in the heart of the film being pushed aside, and ultimately create a worse viewing experience for audiences.

Fortunately, Reynolds words prove that he understands that, and instead of letting the movie become a 2-hour commercial for the MCU, Deadpool & Wolverine put the story first. That isn’t to say that the film won’t have any details that hint at future MCU stories and characters, or even that the main characters won’t return, but that will depend on the strength of those stories to prove themselves, not the promise set up by this movie. So, rather than looking for Easter eggs, Deadpool & Wolverine is a movie that should be enjoyed to the fullest for what it is.
