WARNING: May Contain Spoilers for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #2!

Wonder Woman undergoes a radical costume overhaul in the sequel to Gotham by Gaslight, an Elseworlds series famous for reimagining iconic DC characters in the 19th century. This departure from her traditional look prompts questions about whether DC has captured the essence of her iconic costume in this alternate setting or veered too far from the familiar design.

Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernández’s Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #2 begins with Professor Adam Strange leading an expedition in the Arctic under Bruce Wayne’s sponsorship. However, when half of their team disappears during a scouting mission inland, Strange initiates a search and rescue operation.

While scouring the area for their missing colleagues, they stumble upon the ancient ruins from the Kryptonian Age. Exploring further, they enter the ice-encased city, where they find the body of a missing colleague. Shortly thereafter, they encounter a mysterious and battle-ready figure–Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman Gets Drastic Redesign in Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #2 marks Wonder Woman’s debut in the Elseworlds series, leaving a lasting impression. Initially seen watching the men from a cliff’s edge, she is accused by one of Strange’s men of being responsible for gutting their now-deceased colleague. However, this accusation is unlikely, especially given Wonder Woman’s immediate intervention to save them when a giant centipede creature attacks. This action scene offers readers their first glimpse of Diana Prince in the 19th century.

Wonder Woman’s new costume seamlessly blends elements of gladiator-inspired armor with traditional Inuit clothing. The base layer of her outfit loosely interprets the typical cold-weather garments historically worn by the Inuit. This choice resonates well with the Arctic setting of the scene. The armor complements this fusion, resembling basic Roman gladiator armor with its heavy breastplate, shoulder pauldrons, greaves, vambraces, and a helmet adorned with a distinctive red star. Additionally, Diana is equipped with her Lasso of Truth, sword, and shield, completing her formidable appearance.

Diana Prince’s Gotham by Gaslight Costume Is Her Most Distinctive Look in Comics Yet

Wonder Woman’s redesign in Gotham by Gaslight represents a significant departure from her traditional costumes. The fusion of Inuit and Roman gladiator design elements is a strength of the design. However, its lack of recognition as Wonder Woman is notable, possibly due to the absence of her double “W” emblem and a slightly altered color scheme. The costume incorporates red, blue, and gold, but the proportions and shades of these colors are not quite right, with the prominent use of gold disrupting the overall appearance. While not among Wonder Woman’s most iconic looks, it will certainly be remembered for its unique style.

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes.
