Netflix’s upcoming The Decameron could be the perfect show to fill the hole left behind by the cancelation of Daniel Radcliffe’s hilarious TBS series. Inspired by the 14th-century short stories of Giovanni Boccaccio, the show focuses on a group of nobles trying to escape the Black Death in Florence by hiding in a Tuscan villa. Starring Zodia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel, Leila Farzad, Jessica Plummer, and Tony Hale, it looks to be a very fun riff on the period-piece genre.

It’s far from the first comedic take on the era in recent years, with one season of Daniel Radcliffe’s criminally underrated anthology comedy being set in a very similar era. Both shows seem to share a general tone as well, leaning into the natural dichotomy of the era’s high-class elements with a snarky comedic bent. It means that The Decameron is the ideal follow-up for fans of Radcliffe’s series who are looking for a replacement following its cancelation.

The Decameron Seems Like The Perfect Replacement Show For Miracle Workers Fans

The Decameron Has A Lot In Common With Miracle Workers

The Decameron could be the perfect replacement for the Daniel Radcliffe-led Miracle Workers, particularly those who enjoyed the second season of that show. The Decameron is set in 1348, during the height of the Black Plague’s decimation of Europe. Hoping to avoid the death and despair of the outside world, a group of nobles retreat to an Italian villa only for their drama to escalate into chaos. The goofy but grisly tone, mixed with an exploration of the ruling class in medieval times This actually gives the show a lot of tonal similarities to Miracle Workers‘ second season, “Dark Ages.”

Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Steve Buscemi, Miracle Workers was an anthology comedy series on TBS that shifted focus and setting every season. The second season, titled “Dark Ages,” focused on the sheltered Prince Chauncley and his unlikely bond with an ambitious young peasant woman named Al. Miracle Workers and The Decameron seemingly share a blunt and silly approach to medieval drama, with an overt exploration of sexuality and violence. It also means The Decameron might be what fans of Miracle Workers have been looking for since the latter was canceled.

Vikings: Valhalla, The Tudors, and the Legend of El Cid are among the best Medieval TV shows currently available.

Why Miracle Workers Was Canceled After Season 4

Miracle Workers Was Canceled After The Post-Apocalyptic “End Times”

After four seasons on TBS, Miracle Workers was canceled after the conclusion of the post-apocalyptic fourth season. Although Miracle Workers was a tremendously funny series with a dedicated fanbase, the absurdist approach to different genres likely made it a somewhat expensive series to produce. TBS in recent years has been reducing its original content, with American Dad! being the last original series produced for the network. It appears that Miracle Workers was canceled as part of that process, although its self-contained nature means a potential Miracle Workers season 5 could easily be picked up by another network or streaming service.

In the meantime though, fans of Miracle Workers had gotten a few alternatives that could fill the hole left by the show’s conclusion. My Lady Jane on Prime Video and The Decameron on Netflix explore the same general setting of Miracle Workers‘ second season and do so with a similar comedic showcase for sex and violence. Fans of Miracle Workers may still be brokenhearted about the show’s ending, but series like The Decameron ensure that the style of comedy found in the Daniel Radcliffe anthology continues.
