Thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with the United States Mint, the heroes of the Justice League are going to be immortalized on a series of collectible coins and medals. Not only is this first-of-its-kind collaboration going to honor comic book icons, but fans are getting a say in this unprecedented endeavor.

Just weeks before San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the United States Mint issued a press release that revealed it would be teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The collaboration will honor nine of the greatest superheroes from the DC Universe by depicting them on “24-karat gold coins, .999 fine silver medals, and non-precious metal (clad) medals“.

But which heroes are going to be depicted? Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman will be the first three series issued in the summer of 2025. The remaining six DC Comics heroes will be chosen via a survey on the official U.S. Mint website.

Justice League to Be Honored Through Official United States Mint Coins

Silver Age Justice League DC

Over the years, DC Comics has partnered with numerous organizations in the name of cross-promotion. The comic book publisher has lent its characters to promote candy bars like Snickers and companies like Craftsman Tools. Some of these collaborations have even resulted in full-blown comic books like Kentucky Fried Chicken Presents: The Colonel of Two Worlds #1, the first in an honest-to-goodness trilogy of stories featuring Colonel Sanders interacting with the Flash and Green Lantern. While these promotional endeavors are generally commercial-based, they’re often fun, tongue-in-cheek ways of using the heroes and villains of the DC Universe in unconventional ways.

However, this collaboration is a bit more serious and a huge honor for DC Comics. The series of coins and medals will have their obverses (the heads side) designed by United States Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, while the reverses (the tails side) will be done by one of the Mint’s Medallic Artists under Menna’s direction. This is an amazing way to pay tribute to the DC Universe’s greatest heroes. And as a bonus, fans are going to get to have a say in which heroes are a part of the upcoming series.

Justice League Heroes in the DC Universe

It’s a no-brainer that Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have all made the cut. Now fans get to choose who will join the Trinity in the final remaining six spots. The survey will let fans pick from iconic heroes like Black Canary, Shazam, Cyborg, Flash, Batgirl, and more. Though some DC heroes will be left out in the end, it’s still a fascinating effort and one that’s sure to have collectors already buzzing. Fans who wish to vote for their favorite Justice League member to be a part of the series can vote on the United States Mint website until August 11, 2024.
