Chainsaw Man‘s Denji has been suffering more than ever with the latest developments in the manga. Denji lost his beloved pets, Power’s cat Meowy and Makima’s dogs, and had a controversial encounter with Yoru, which left him conflicted. But that isn’t remotely compared to the most recent event prompted by the manga, which teased a horrible fate for Nayuta, and that Denji could go through a reiteration of the most harrowing moment of Part 1.

In CSM‘s chapter #170, “How to Eat Sushi,” Barem, the second-in-command of the Chainsaw Man Church, who was present during the Control Devil Arc as the Flamethrower Devil, talks about his plan with Denji. Barem explains to Denji why Chainsaw Man can erase Devils and what he needs to do to see his little “sister” Nayuta again.

However, in a very shocking reveal, Nayuta’s head appears on the sushi belt, distressing fans and calling back to the most gut-wrenching scene of Chainsaw Man‘s Part 1, Denji consuming Makima.

In chapter #170, Barem insists on Denji sitting down and eating sushi, passing him several plates. But Denji shoves the pieces in his mouth fast, so Barem tells him to slowly enjoy the food and asks the chef to bring the main dish, which turns out to be Nayuta’s decapitated head, coming from the conveyor belt just like a sushi dish.

The way Nayuta’s head was introduced, along with Barem being adamant about Denji eating and the multiple panels emphasizing the food, could mean that the sushi he ate was not fish but other parts of Nayuta’s body. This is reinforced by the fact that when Barem offered Denji the tuna, the dialogue was in bold, just like when he explained the reason behind Chainsaw Man’s powers. While this revelation is definitely a very hard blow for Denji that will throw him into despair, it also recalls Chainsaw Man’s chapter #96, when Denji ate Makima in a Japanese-style meal.

Denji ate Makima to prevent her from restoring her body and also as a way for her to remain a part of him forever. Both scenes really contrast with each other, with Denji deliberately eating Makima, preparing the food himself, slowly savoring, and even enjoying some, while Denji devours the sushi fast and reluctantly, without tasting it. Denji eating Nayuta will mean that the Control Devil will spawn somewhere in a new host, repeating Makima’s fate and taking everything away from Denji once again, completing Barem’s plan.

In Chainsaw Man‘s most controversial chapter, Yoru suddenly remembers that she had kissed Denji before. Since Nayuta had used her control devil powers to make Yoru and Asa forget the date with Denji, her death could be the cause of the War Devil regaining her memory. This means the probability of Nayuta’s head being a trick and not her real corpse is low.

However, as the Control Devil power limits haven’t been defined, the implications of Nayuta’s death should be disclosed in the upcoming chapters. Nevertheless, the scene of Nayuta’s head has certainly beat Makima as the most harrowing scene in the manga, making Chainsaw Man’s fans unable to see sushi on a conveyor belt in the same way again.
