The plot and filming timeline for a Kalki 2898 AD sequel is teased by director Nag Ashwin. Standing at 3 hours long, Kalki 2898 AD is an Indian action epic about an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu that has descended to the Earth in order to shield the entire globe from evil powers at be. The cast of Kalki 2898 AD is led by superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan, with a supporting cast that included Prabhas, Kamal Hassan, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, Keerthy Suresh, Anna Ben, Pasupathy, and Saswata Chatterjee.

Speaking with Variety, Ashwin teases the plot and production schedule for a Kalki 2898 AD sequel. Ashwin said that him and his team have “shot about 25 or 30 days” on the action sequel. Even with this amount of filming already behind them, Ashwin said that “there is still a lot of action left.” Ashwin spoke about the sequel’s plot as well, saying that they will wrap up “every loose end or thread left hanging” from the first film. The most important element to cover will be the face off between Yaskin, Karna, and Ashwatthama. Check out the full quote from Ashwin below:

We shot about 25 or 30 days, but there’s a lot of action still left. It’s almost like a whole new production that’s going to start.

Every loose end or thread that we left hanging has to be wrapped up. Obviously, the most important thing will be the face-off between these three, which will be between Yaskin who can now wield the Gandiva, which is thought to be the most powerful weapon, versus Karna and Ashwatthama, who are the most fearsome warriors.

Kalki 2898 AD’s Recording-Breaking Production Explained

Though the speed at which the Kalki 2898 AD sequel is being produced could be surprising given how recently the first film came out, the film’s production background makes this timeline make sense. With a $75 million budget, Kalki 2898 AD is the most expensive Indian-produced film of all time. Pouring such ample resources into the movie suggests that India’s cinema scene is placing a lot of faith in the success of the action epic, so leaning into its sequels and potential cinematic universe is a logical next move.

So far, the confidence in Kalki 2898 AD‘s success has not been misguided. The film passed a major global box office milestone this week, opening to over $66 million. This opening put Kalki 2898 AD as the no. 3 film globally, and made it the highest-grossing debut of all time for any Indian film. With an opening weekend already coming in close to the film’s budget, the chances that Kalki 2898 AD turns a profit are increasingly high. This also bodes well for the production of the sequel.
