James Gunn’s Superman movie may be setting up a big twist for David Corenswet’s titular hero as a new DC Universe set video finds the lead in a shocking situation. With multiple DCU Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” movies and TV shows currently in the works at DC Studios, Gunn’s Superman film is close to being done with principal photography. Even though Creature Commandos will be premiering later in 2024, Superman is the first proper film that will set the foundation for the upcoming franchise.

The Superman movie cast have now been filming for some time, leading to many interesting glimpses of the upcoming movie. This is especially true of a new Superman set video that has recently emerged online (via @DCUSuperNews), which appears to feature Corenswet’s leading hero backing away from a crowd of Metropolis citizens. The crowd’s behavior in the video has led some to theorize that these civilians are actually scared of the hero in this scene, which would be a major twist given prior scenes teased the Man of Steel being a beloved guardian of the city.

Several classic DC Comics villains are still to be depicted in live-action but would be ideal antagonists in the DCU’s Superman movie and beyond.

Why DCU’s Superman Plot Twist Theory Would Make Sense For The Movie

While it is hard to make out what is fully going on in the Superman set video, this may tie back to another plot point that was revealed in some of the new images from the production. In a previous batch of Superman set photos, Krypton’s last son seemingly ends up being arrested by the military. However, a few DC characters are part of this sequence, too, as The Engineer and Rick Flag Sr. are seen being part of arresting Superman.

It wouldn’t be shocking if someone like Lex Luthor is slowly starting to get the public to turn on Superman, which in turn could lead to the reason why the people of Metropolis are now beginning to fear him. What could be the cause of this sudden change of heart about the Man of Tomorrow is the bigger mystery, which has thankfully not gotten spoiled through the set photos and videos that have been making the rounds. If Superman is now going to have to win back the public’s trust, that would make for a very compelling story.

For Gunn’s DC Universe to have the first Superman movie in the franchise kick off with this type of storyline would also help it set itself apart from other live-action stories. Since this version of Superman will already have been established when the story picks up in the 2025 film, there could be other factors that lead to people suddenly starting to fear Metropolis’ protector. But for now, the DC Universe audience will have to settle with theories about what could be going down in the new Superman set video.
