Inside Out 2 passes even more box office records as it continues its strong run. A highly-anticipated sequel to the 2015 Pixar film Inside Out, Inside Out 2‘s reviews have been extremely positive thus far. Said positive reviews are coupled with an immensely strong run at the box office, as Inside Out 2 has crossed the much-coveted $1 billion mark. The film was the no.1 movie at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, and even stayed at no. 1 during its second weekend, beating out A Quiet Place: Day One.

As per Collider, Inside Out 2 soars past even more box office records. On Tuesday, its 19th day in theaters, the film added $11 million to its domestic box office haul. With this total added, Inside Out 2 ‘s grand domestic total has made it to $489 million. As a result, it has become the second-highest-grossing Pixar movie of all time domestically, falling short only of The Incredibles 2. That was not the only box office record Inside Out 2 passed, for it also became the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time domestically.

Could Inside Out 2 Be the Highest-Grossing Film of 2024?

The rate at which Inside Out 2 is passing these records is an impressive testament to its box office potency. Just this week, the film became the fourth-highest-grossing animated film domestically, and now it has passed Finding Dory‘s $486 million haul to become the third-highest-grossing. Inside Out 2 also showed its staying power and continued strength through the fact that its Tuesday ticket sales represented a 30% increase over Monday’s numbers. It needs to add under $100 million to beat out its next challenger, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which seems highly possible due to its present numbers.

As it stands, Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far by a wide margin. With its global haul at $1.073 billion, Inside Out 2 has an over $300 million advantage over the no. 2 film, Dune: Part Two (at $711.8 million). Its domestic box office will likely double that of Dune‘s, as its $489.3 million haul is far ahead of Dune: Part Two‘s $282.1 million domestically. This huge lead suggests that Inside Out 2‘s box office domination is not temporary, meaning that it could stay the no. 1 film of 2024 for the remainder of the year.

Inside Out 2 Ending Explained

Inside Out 2’s emotional ending highlights Riley’s character growth and builds on the underlying moral themes of the original Inside Out.

That said, Inside Out 2‘s momentum is likely to slow down in the coming days. This holiday week sees the release of the film’s greatest competitor, Despicable Me 4. This film alone will stop Inside Out 2 in its tracks, likely usurping it for the no. 1 slot. The summer also sees the release of blockbusters, including upcoming sequels Alien: Romulus and Deadpool vs. Wolverine that could surpass Inside Out 2‘s lifetime total. Looking at the totals now, Inside Out 2‘s shot at the no. 1 film of 2024 is still solid, but not secure as the summer is far from over.
