Warning! Spoilers for Absolute Power: Ground Zero ahead! One of Superman’s greatest new allies has officially fallen from grace and gone all-in on assisting Amanda Waller taking the DC Universe by force. Absolute Power is here and the once-promising Dreamer has found herself on the wrong side of history.

Fans fell for Dreamer in her appearances in the live-action Supergirl television series and eagerly welcomed her when she finally debuted in the Prime DC Universe. Unfortunately, she was targeted by Waller who wanted to use Nia Nal’s skills to ensure Amanda would successfully defeat Earth’s metahumans. With her back against the wall, the whole world is about to discover Dreamer’s treachery.

Dreamer Reveals Her New Alliance and Betrays Superman’s Boyfriend

In the Absolute Power: Ground Zero #1 story “Stage One” by Nicole Maines, Mark Waid, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands, Jay Nakamura is on the island nation of Gamorra running for his life. He reflects on the recent death of his mother at Amanda Waller’s hands and vows to expose what Waller has done and what she’s planning. Unfortunately, Jay is shot in the foot by Deadeye. To make matters worse, Jay runs into Deadeye’s new Suicide Squad teammate: Dreamer.

Jay is relieved to encounter a friendly face, but his hopes are dashed when he finds himself restrained by Nia’s dream energy and unable to phase through the bonds she’s created. Dreamer tries to plead for Jay, but Deadeye reminds Dreamer of her job. Jay attempts to fight back, only for Dreamer to knock Jay out cold. Jay is placed in a prison cell and Nia visits him, offering him food. But Jay is more concerned with why Dreamer has suddenly gone to the dark side.

Dreamer informs Jay that Waller has both Nia’s father and sister and will kill both of them if Dreamer doesn’t comply. Jay tells Dreamer that Waller had his mother killed as well and it isn’t long before Jay realizes that Dreamer helped Waller kill Jay’s mom. Nia tries to defend herself and apologizes to her friend, but her words fall on deaf ears. Dreamer leaves Jay in his cell as he insults her, saying that she’s “no hero” and “just as bad as the rest of them”.

Dreamer’s Journey From Hero to Villain

After debuting in the Arrowverse television show Supergirl, Dreamer officially came to the Prime DC Universe. She broke into the Fortress of Solitude to warn Superman Jon Kent and his boyfriend Jay Nakamura about a premonition that revealed a terrifying future brought on by Henry Bendix. However, the two were able to work together along with Jon’s allies and kept that future from transpiring. The two would sporadically team up, at least, until Dreamer caught the eye of Amanda Waller.

When the DC Universe was overrun by animal-human hybrids in “Beast World”, Jon assisted Dreamer in protecting the alien community A-Town from a rampaging Livewire. They were successful, but the event brought Nia to Amanda Waller’s attention. When the dust from “Beast World” cleared, Waller recruited Dreamer by threatening to expose the existence of Parthas, a town for alien refugees and Nia’s home. Dreamer went on a mission to find a rogue precog and succeeded in proving how useful she could be to Waller’s plans.

Now that Waller had made Dreamer one of her assets, Amanda used Nia, along with the latest incarnation of the Suicide Squad, to seize Gamorra. Dreamer complied, fearing that her family and community would be exposed. However, once Nia saw the bloodshed the Squad brought to Gamorra, she ran. Waller made good on her threat and doxxed Parthas, causing Dreamer to head home and protect it. Nia was eventually caught by the Suicide Squad and eventually confronted Waller, who threatened to kill Dreamer’s father and sister if she went against Amanda.

Dreamer Has No Choice But to Be a Villain

Waller Asking Dreamer to See into the Future DC

Dreamer might be able to see into the future, but even she didn’t see the terrible things Waller has put her through coming. Nia has made it blatantly clear that she doesn’t endorse what Waller’s doing and that Dreamer’s only going along with this to keep her family safe. However, Dreamer has been culpable in some pretty awful things, namely the death of Jay’s mother, the president of Gamorra. She didn’t pull the trigger, but she did aid the Suicide Squad so they could seize the island nation by force.

It’s no coincidence that the first person to discover what Dreamer’s been up to is Jay. Jay is one of the first people Nia met after officially becoming a hero and Dreamer was crucial in saving Jay’s mother from Bendix’s forces. Jay fought by Dreamer’s side and knows that she’s got a heroic spirit in her. But that was before Nia made compromise after compromise and found herself becoming Waller’s greatest asset. Now Dreamer is imprisoning the people who called her ‘friend’ and helping usher in a dark age in the DC Universe.

Again, this isn’t what Dreamer wants. But in her determination to protect her home and family, Dreamer’s allowed Waller to dig in too deep. Now Nia has no other option but to go on with what Waller has planned in Absolute Power. Of course, it really all comes down to whether or not Dreamer can get her family to safety. If Nia or someone else could ensure that her sister and father wouldnt’ be hurt, she’d turn on Waller in a second. But as long as they’re at risk, Dreamer has no other option than to take Waller’s orders.

Can Dreamer Find Her Way Back to Heroism?

Dreamer DC Comics

The road to hell is paved with good intentions and while Dreamer is only on her current path to keep her family safe, she’s unquestionably on the wrong side right now. But while one could say Jay is justified to rebuke Dreamer, her history proves she’s got a heroic heart. Nia’s a bit lost right now, but anyone would be in such a precarious situation. Hopefully, her friend Superman or some other figure can help Dreamer out of this dilemma so she can return to being the hero fans know that she is.
