That ’90s Show season 2 revealed some funny similarities between Red Foreman and his son, Eric. The series is a sequel to the very popular That ’70s Show, which followed the lives of Eric Foreman and his friends. While That ’90s Show follows a different generation, Red Foreman, played by Kurtwood Smith, remains a significant That ’90s Show character as the series takes place at Red and Kitty’s house in Point Place.

That 90s Show season two has brought back Leia and her friendship group, reintroducing excitement into the Foreman home. After Eric and his friends moved out of Eric’s basement, the house was empty until Leia and her friends took over the roles of the original That ’70s Show friend group. This, in combination with Red’s retirement, has led him to start an interesting hobby. Red’s hobby gets even more amusing when it’s compared to a hobby Eric had years ago on That ’70s Show.

Red’s Model Train Hobby In That ’90s Show Is Funnier After The Hard Time He Gave Eric

Eric Is Known For Collecting Star Wars ‘Toys’

Part two of That ’90s Show revealed that Red started a new hobby with model trains. Given Red’s retirement, it makes sense that he would start a new hobby to fill his time, but the fact that the hobby is railway modeling is surprising for several reasons. Red is portrayed as a tough guy and railway modeling is a very delicate and particular hobby that seems to be the opposite of Red’s interests. In That ’70s Show, Red also gave Eric a hard time for having a similar hobby of collecting action figures, or “toys“, as Red would call them.

Throughout That ’70s Show, Topher Grace’s Eric Foreman was known for collecting Star Wars action figures and collectibles. He was even such a big fan of the franchise that he named his only daughter, Leia, after the female lead of Star Wars. Despite this, Red would always dismiss Eric’s interest in the movies and comically insult him for not being tough enough. Red’s hypocrisy makes his surprising hobby all the more amusing – it is very out of character, yet somehow perfect at the same time.

More Free Time Means There’s Room For New Interests

Red’s model train hobby is important because it emphasizes Red’s current stage in life. Since Red retired and the That ’70s Show characters left, it makes sense that Red wanted to take up a new hobby to fill his time. After all, Leia and her friends are only at the house during the summer, so the house is usually empty. Part one of That ’90s Show also revealed that Kitty was going back to work, which gave Red even more reason to find something to do. Red’s new hobby is amusing but fitting given the circumstances, while also offering a poignant connection to his son.

That ’70s Show returns set two decades later with That ’90s Show, acting as a sequel but bringing back old cast favorites. Led by Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) Forman, the new cast arrives as the next generation, with the daughter of Eric and Donna, Leia Forman, leading the charge. Spending the summer with her grandparents, Leia makes new friends and forges new bonds in Point Place, Wisconsin. That ’70s Show series regulars make cameos in the show to maintain that sense of familiarity, and the show adopts the conventions of the ’90s as expected.
