This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3, and Fire & Blood.

House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 adds a new twist to a popular Aemond Targaryen theory from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. While House of the Dragon has made changes to the book, the series has so far followed Fire & Blood relatively closely. The HBO adaptation has so far confirmed a couple of theories and headcanons about the book, but it has also debunked others. This includes, for example, whether Aegon II’s children were truly his.

Given the cold, almost non-existent relationship between Aegon and Helaena Targaryen, many believed that the father of her kids was actually Aemond. This theory stemmed mostly from the way Aemond treated his sister compared to Aegon. However, neither Fire & Blood nor House of the Dragon had ever confirmed this was the case. In fact, House of the Dragon had all but confirmed that this Aemond and Helaena theory was wrong. However, a possible romantic relationship between Aemond and Helaena cannot be ruled out after episode 3.

Aemond & Aegon’s Brothel Scene Could Set Up Aemond Sleeping With Helaena

Will Aemond seek payback against Aegon?

House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 added another layer to the complex dynamic between Aemond and Aegon Targaryen. During the brothel scene, Aegon made fun of his brother for sleeping with Sylvi, with whom Aemond lost his virginity when he was 13. House of the Dragon strongly implies that Aemond has never been with anyone else, or that at least he was never able to form any meaningful connections with anyone else other than Sylvi. This is why Aegon says “Even now, my brother will not sample another.”

Aemond was bothered but did not do anything other than stand proud and go away. Considering that Aemond is not one to let insults go easily – as seen with his relationship with Lucerys Velaryon over the years – the brothel scene may have been the start of a bad blood between the prince and the king. This could tie into a popular fan theory that Aemond was actually in love with Helaena. While it does not seem like Aemond and Helaena ever had anything, Aemond could now try to take action against his brother by becoming romantically involved with their sister.

Could Aemond Actually Be The Father Of Maelor Targaryen?

House of the Dragon has not included Maelor.

House of the Dragon season 2’s first two episodes did not even acknowledge the theory that Aemond is the father of Helaena’s children, all but confirming this is not the case after all. However, House of the Dragon’s Blood and Cheese scene confirmed that the show skipped over one of Aegon and Helana’s children – Maegon Targaryen. Although Maelor’s exclusion from the HBO adaptation had to do with the timeline of the show, Helaena’s forgotten third child could perhaps be brought into the series later down the road. If Aemond and Helaena do sleep together, Aemond could be Maelor’s father.

This scenario does not seem very likely, though, especially because Aemond will soon be on the battlefield and might be involved with Alys Rivers. Based on what happens in Fire & Blood, Aegon II will soon be injured in a battle between dragons that raises the stakes for the war and essentially seals the fate of the Targaryen dynasty. Aemond could become closer to Helaena in the absence of an injured Aegon, but it is now too late for House of the Dragon to even attempt to write a romantic relationship between the prince and his sister.
