With any fandom as passionate as that of A Court of Thorns and Roses, there are bound to be some great memes, and ACOTAR has some excellent ones. Sarah J. Maas’ series has beloved characters, and their dynamics with each other make for some of the best in-jokes among the readership. Not to mention, the heavy focus on fated mates, spicy sex scenes, and enemies-to-lovers tropes give the fandom plenty of fodder for fun.

Even the series’ problems, such as A Court of Thorns and Roses‘ inconsistent character roles, are fertile ground for funny memes. Readers have a while to wait until the next ACOTAR book comes out, but in the meantime, fans can entertain themselves by thinking up more clever memes to go with the Court of Thorns and Roses fan art they’ve created. This list has some of the funniest – including a few that just hit different.

Elain’s Before & After Cauldron Change

She’s (Literally) Seen Some Ish

ACOTAR fans know that before Elain went into the cauldron, she was a non-entity. After she came out of the cauldron…well, she was still a non-entity, but now she said weird stuff. Frustratingly (but also somewhat hilariously), no one in the Inner Circle seemed to place at first that it was Elain’s powers of clairvoyance manifesting, instead believing that her mind was fractured from the ordeal and she’d just gone insane. Hopefully, Elain will get a better storyline (or any storyline) in the next Court of Thorns and Roses book so readers can better understand her seer powers.

Amren & Nesta’s Friendship

The Best Frenemies Ever

Cauldron-Made Nesta and re-Made Amren have had a strange and tumultuous relationship in the ACOTAR books. Amren recognized something kindred in Nesta after she came out of the Cauldron, perhaps that silver flame of pure death flickering behind Nesta’s eyes, just as Amren had raw, terrifying power swirling in her silvery eyes. Like calls to like, after all. Still, as she did with many things before healing from her grief, Nesta destroyed her friendship with Amren, but it’s still not been explained what she did to ruin it. Now, while they’re somewhat better, they’re still prone to taking shots at each other.

The Suriel. Just The Suriel.

Prythian’s Favorite Gossip Girl Tea Spiller

In A Court of Thorns and Roses, the Suriel was made out to be the most terrifying and grotesque of the old forest entities lurking in the woods of the Spring Court, a malevolent being that even Lucien and Tamlin feared. Feyre, however, did not, and she and the Suriel forged a somewhat odd – if not friendship, then certainly mutual kinship – with each other. As it turns out, the Suriel is quite the Prythian tea carrier seeing and knowing the future and all the land’s secrets. And he’s always down to spill, making him Prythian’s version of Gossip Girl or Regina George’s Burn Book.

The Meta Meme

Cassian Called The Whole Fandom OUT

Are Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie, a trio to rival the Illyrian three? Yes. Yes, they are. Are they as tough as the Illyrian three? Yes. Yes, they are. Are they far more obsessed with smut? Yes. Yes, they are. It’s exactly why the fandom loves them as besties, the three finding each other at their individual low points and making each other that much stronger. Their resilience is tested through relentless training and a brutal Blood Rite. Just because they’re butt-kicking Valkyrie now doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy their spicy romance books, though. Let’s be honest: they’re us, the fandom.

Azriel Puts Up With…Just So, So Much

Can Someone Please Get Our Emo King Earplugs?

While Azriel is a discreet sort and never – much – mentioned that he could smell and hear Nesta and Cassian’s sexual exploits all over the House of Wind, that doesn’t mean the readership can’t bring it up. The fandom has had a field day with plenty of memes about Azriel being the unfortunate man in the middle of the awkward, will they/won’t they dynamic between Nesta and Cassian through the entirety of A Court of Silver Flames. Even if he wanted to escape somewhere where he couldn’t hear or smell their very obvious arousal, the spymaster probably still wouldn’t be able to get completely away thanks to his shadows telling him everything.

Seriously, Someone Throw Az A Bone

Literally & Figuratively, Amirite?

Azriel has become a fan favorite for a reason. Everybody loves a dark, broody, emo boy with a tortured past. Bonus if the books continue to torture him as he pines away for not one, but two loves that can not be. And the ACOTAR books certainly do love to torture Az. While his brothers from other mothers are busy hooking up and finding their mates, poor Azriel is left without anyone of his own. The one woman he has loved for hundreds of years views him only as a friend (and would like to experiment with women) and the other woman he loves is mated to someone else. The next book better give the lonely boy a mate of his own.

Only The Best Dark Humor For Azriel

Hecky Heck, He Craveth Death

Yes, there are a lot of Azriel memes on this list, but in its defense, there are a lot of Azriel memes on the internet. Again, everyone loves the big, broody bat boy. The above memes are dark – dark dark – but the draw toward despair and deeply held pain is part of what makes Azriel who he is. He’s a tormented soul and there’s no other way to paint it. Still, it’s impossible to picture the big, scary shadowsinger and spymaster who has tortured and assassinated so many saying “Hecky heck” without snorting with laughter. The “Bro, we talked about this” from Cassian is perfect, too.

Tamlin Is Basically The Game Of Thrones Horse Meme

His Development Is Going In Reverse

Tamlin’s general characterization in the ACOTAR books has been a lot like that Game of Thrones horse meme that starts as a brilliantly detailed illustration at the front and fades to a child’s drawing by the end. In A Court of Thorns and Roses, Tamlin was a great character: fleshed-out, well-rounded, and finely-drawn. Then Feyre left him and he immediately stopped being a character and having a personality. Occasionally, he turns up to be a real d*ck to everyone at a big meeting, but otherwise, Tamlin’s just been off on a spiritual journey in the forests of the Spring Court, running around in beast mode for the past year. As a character, his arc and characterization are going in reverse.

The book covers for A Court of Frost & Starlight and A Court of Silver Flames with blue flowers as a background

Can We Please Get Poor Lucien Some Action Already?

Our Foxy Boy Deserves Better

It’s hard to know which poor, besotted boy has gotten the worse deal in the ACOTAR books: Azriel or Lucien. Lucien has been really sidelined since the first book, but not for lack of trying on readers’ collective part. No, they love the foxy boy, prince of the Autumn Court, bastard son of Helion, High Lord of the Day Court, long-suffering friend of Tamlin, and frustrated mate of Elain – so much so that there have been many, many sexual innuendo jokes made regarding his flame-red hair and golden eye. Let’s just say the fandom really, really wants to get to Lucien’s romance and spicy scenes already. It wouldn’t hurt for Lucien to become High King, either.

1

The Three Stooges (Of The Night Court)

You Know This Is EXACTLY How It Would Go

Even though the above meme has never actually happened in A Court of Thorns and Roses, somehow, every reader knows this is exactly how it would go. On the surface, the Illyrian three are some of the most feared and respected characters in all of Prythian: Rhysand, the High Lord of the Night Court, Cassian, the near-unkillable general of the Illyrian legion, and Azriel, the terrifying boogeyman and spymaster of the Night Court. Beneath the surface…they’re idiots. Just three idiots acting like big kids when they’re together, whether it’s a snowball fight or wrestling matches. It’s one of the things that makes their dynamic so great, even if two of them are mated off now.
