The Exorcism‘s VOD release date has now been revealed. Directed by Joshua John Miller, The Exorcism stars Russell Crowe as Anthony Miller, an actor who begins to behave erratically while filming a horror flick. His daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), soon begins to suspect that sinister forces are at work. The film, which hit theaters on June 21, 2024, was met with mostly negative reviews.

Bloody Disgusting now reveals that The Exorcism will arrive on VOD platforms on July 9, 2024. This means that the movie will have been in theaters for less than three weeks before viewers have the opportunity to watch it from the comfort of their own homes. The horror film is already available for pre-order on Apple TV.

Crowe’s previous horror movie, director Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist, hit theaters in April 2023, earning mixed reviews but proving more popular with audiences. Expectations were high, then, that The Exorcism, a movie dealing with similar subject matter with a similar title, would reach these same heights. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

The Exorcism‘s reviews have generally been quite negative, and the film currently has only a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is also low at 36%. Criticisms of the movie mostly focus on the fact that it offers up very little that’s new in a genre that has been explored to death. Instead of subverting tropes and offering up surprises, The Exorcism mostly feels fairly predictable and features many of the same issues that have plagued the genre for years.

The Exorcism has also been a disappointment at the box office. The film has, as of writing, earned only $6.4 million worldwide, suggesting a fairly clear rejection from audiences. It’s not entirely clear what the film’s budget was, but some estimates put it as high as $22 million. It may be lower than that in actuality, but it wouldn’t be low enough for the movie to be considered anything but a major disappointment. Perhaps, however, The Exorcism will prove more popular with viewers when it arrives on VOD next week.
