Marry Me has become a global Netflix hit. The movie, which earned $50.5 million at the box office when it premiered in 2022, stars Jennifer Lopez as Kat Valdez, a pop star whose collaborator and fiancé cheats on her shortly before their televised wedding, so she decides to accept what she thinks is a proposal from a math teacher (Owen Wilson) in the audience. The Marry Me cast also includes Maluma, John Bradley, Chloe Coleman, Sarah Silverman, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Michelle Buteau.

Netflix has now calculated their global chart of the Top 10 most-watched English language movies for the week of June 24 through June 30. Marry Me has landed at No. 4 thanks to 4.3 million viewers accumulating a total of 8.1 million viewing hours. It is the second-highest-ranked movie on the chart that is not a Netflix original, behind 1997’s Kiss the Girls at No. 3. It has also ranked higher than the Netflix original animated hit Ultraman: Rising, which hit No. 5 in its third week on the chart.

Marry Me Has Become A Netflix Success At The Perfect Time

Jennifer Lopez Has Had A Recent Notable Career Setback

Along with her recent Netflix sci-fi hit Atlas, which left the Top 10 chart just two weeks earlier, Marry Me could help boost Jennifer Lopez’s career during a time when she has suffered a notable setback. She recently cancelled a planned summer tour promoting her new album This Is Me… Now. While the officially announced reason was that she had decided to spend more time with her family, the tour had reportedly been selling considerably fewer tickets than anticipated.

This success also comes in spite of the overall disappointing performance of the movie when it was released in 2022. While it earned more than $50 million and became the first rom-com to hit No. 1 at the box office over Valentine’s Day weekend since About Last Night in 2014, its $23 million budget means that its break-even point was likely $46 million, so it probably didn’t turn much of a profit. Marry Me reviews were also lukewarm overall, earning the movie a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it just one percent above the threshold to be considered “Fresh.”

In addition to boosting the movie’s profile in general, the streaming success of the rom-com could also lead to renewed interest in the Marry Me soundtrack, which features several original songs performed by Lopez. While this may not be enough to reignite general interest in the star’s tour, it highlights her skills as a musical performer and may boost interest in her other albums including This Is Me… Now.
