House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 saw Rhaena Targaryen leave for the Vale along with four dragon eggs, leading many to wonder if she will get a dragon of her own in the future. As of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 3’s ending, Rhaenyra began moving the final pieces into place to prepare for a war she cannot prevent. One such precaution Rhaenyra takes is sending Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys – her youngest children – and Rhaena – Daemon’s youngest daughter – to the Vale to protect them from the ensuing Dance of Dragons.

However, the children were not sent to the Vale alone. Rhaenyra sent four dragon eggs – and two small dragons – with them as a gift to House Arryn, providing a major connection between House of the Dragon and Daenerys Targaryen. Rhaena, as the youngest descendant of House of the Dragon‘s House Velaryon, is often overlooked by those in power, explaining her vacation to the Vale. Another reason for this is that Rhaena does not have a dragon of her own to help fight against the Greens, though a common theory is that the dragon eggs she now travels with will change this.

House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, a textbook-like novel that details the history of House Targaryen before the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. In this book, Rhaena eventually receives what she desires when one of the eggs hatches in the Vale. This egg spawns a pink-scaled dragon whom Rhaena immediately bonds with and names Morning.

In House of the Dragon, it is the blue egg that will likely end up hatching into Morning. House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3’s director, Geeta Patel, confirmed that the gold, red, and green dragon eggs are those of Daenerys’ dragons, Viserion, Drogon, and Rhaegal respectively. As such, the fourth egg must be the one that hatches later into Morning, providing Rhaena with her dragon.

Rhaena Is The Last Known Dragonrider Before Daenerys Targaryen

Morning’s Connection With Rhaena Is Important To The Wider History Of Westeros

House of the Dragon‘s setup of Morning is compelling for a few reasons. While it could simply be rendered enjoyable because of the possibility of seeing another dragon in the future, it also links to the wider history of Westeros. Game of Thrones made it clear that Daenerys’ dragon’s hatching was a major event, as was her eventual riding of Drogon. Daenerys became the first dragon rider in the Game of Thrones universe in generations, going all the way back to Rhaena.

In Fire and Blood, it is explored that several dragons are hatched after the Dance of Dragons. However, they become continuously smaller until the dragons become extinct. The last known dragon that was big enough to ride was Morning, with the others being killed in the Targaryen Civil War or disappearing into the wilderness. This makes Rhaena the last dragon rider before Daenerys, given other characters like Aegon III refuse to ride dragons and Nettles – a Dragonseed – disappears after the events of House of the Dragon.
