After everything happening in episode #1110, One Piece episode #1111 is set to be a major turning point for the anime. A lot of the major mysteries of the arc are on the verge of finally being answered, and once that happens, the story’s trajectory is bound to head in another unexpected direction and make things all the more exciting to watch.

One Piece episode #1110 continued the fight against the Seraphim, and while the focus was mostly on Luffy, Zoro, Lucci, and Kaku fighting S-Bear and S-Hawk, the other rampaging Seraphim also had plenty of moments devoted to their fights and how much people were struggling to deal with them.

It was something of a slow episode, but it did a good job of moving the plot along, regardless, and it leaves a lot to be excited about for episode #1111 and beyond.

What Happened In One Piece Episode #1110?

One Piece episode #1110, “Survive! Deadly Combat with the Strongest Form of Humanity!”, opened with Luffy, Zoro, Lucci, and Kaku still fighting S-Bear and S-Hawk and making very little headway. Eventually, Zoro realized that the Seraphim had the same Lunarian abilities as King, meaning they had to keep track of when the flames on the Seraphim’s backs were lit to know when they could hit them. Everyone admonished Zoro for taking so long to make the connection between King and the Seraphim, but they kept fighting, regardless.

The fights against the other Seraphim were continuing with similar difficulties. While Lilith initially subdued S-Snake with special bubbles that mimicked the power of the sea on Devil Fruit users, S-Snake used her cuteness to get everyone to let their guard down and petrified Usopp and Lilith while Franky was left with only an arm. Elsewhere, Nami and Brook’s attacks proved largely ineffective against S-Shark, but before Nami could get seriously hurt, Sanji arrived and saved Nami from S-Shark.

While all the fighting was happening, Shaka snuck away to one of Vegapunk’s old laboratories as he suspected Vegapunk might have been held captive there. Sure enough, Shaka found Vegapunk and the missing Cipher Pol agents locked up, but before he could release them or ask about what happened, Shaka was shot dead by the mastermind behind the Seraphim’s rampage. The assailant’s identity wasn’t revealed, but Vegapunk’s reaction made it clear that the theory of one of the Satellites being a traitor had to be true.

Out of all the big moments in One Piece episode #1110, one of the biggest was undoubtedly Shaka’s death at the end of the episode. While One Piece has had more on-screen deaths over the past decade, it still tends to fall into a pattern of only teasing the idea of someone dying outside of flashbacks, so Shaka being explicitly killed in vivid detail is a surprising turn for One Piece. Since the Satellites are robots, there’s a chance Shaka could be rebuilt, but it’s still a shocking scene for an anime like One Piece, regardless.

One Piece Slowly Moves Its Story Along With Episode #1110

On the technical side of things, One Piece episode #1110 was something of a weak episode, even without comparing it to the high quality of episode #1109. Episode #1110 never looked bad, but One Piece episode #1110 was another episode that fell victim to the One Piece anime’s tendency to employ senseless padding, with many scenes either needlessly dragged out or interlaced with random flashbacks. It’s not as bad as some other examples from the series, but it still reminded fans of the issues that One Piece‘s remake will hopefully fix.

That being said, not all of the padding in episode #1110 was hard to watch. While most of the padding was the sort that existed largely to pad out the runtime, One Piece episode #1110 did a good job of expanding on the fights with the Seraphim through extra comedy and action, all of which felt in line with Eiichiro Oda’s style of writing. That did a lot to flesh out a series of fights that were largely lackluster in the manga, and overall, it added a lot to the episode.

Tying everything together, of course, were the narrative beats of One Piece episode #1110. As slow as episode #1110 might have been, between the escalation of the fights, Shaka’s death, and Vegapunk meeting the mastermind behind the Seraphim’s rampage, One Piece episode #1110 did a lot to advance the story forward, and episode #1111 is sure to keep that going. One Piece’s story is still firing on all cylinders in the Egghead Island arc, and episode #1111 and beyond are sure to take that even further.
