Netflix’s hit, The Umbrella Academy, is set to release season 4 as its final season this summer, but a new series ranked 100% on Rotten Tomatoes can satisfy those looking for superhero content outside the Marvel and DC universes: Supacell. Much of this medium is predictably driven by Marvel and DC, but shows outside both franchises have been able to thrive on streaming platforms. Among the biggest to do this are The Boys on Prime Video and The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. But while The Umbrella Academy is Netflix’s biggest superhero show right now, it has other noteworthy options.

While Netflix’s beloved The Umbrella Academy holds a respectable 86% average score on the Tomatometer, Rapman’s six-part Supacell series has already managed to earn a notable 100%, surpassing other popular superhero shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Smallville. Regarding Supacell’s cast and characters, the show focuses on an array of South Londoners who develop powers but seemingly have no connection to one another. Its underlying premise distinguishes it from The Umbrella Academy story-wise, but certain elements of it make it an enjoyable watch ahead of The Umbrella Academy season 4.

While viewers may want more exploration of The Umbrella Academy’s timeline and alternate universes, Netflix’s recent Supacell release holds promise for those who love the strong combination of superpowers and super storytelling. Since major brands like Marvel and DC Comics dominate much of the superhero genre, Rapman’s newfound sci-fi success follows the trend that The Umbrella Academy upholds in promoting supernatural entertainment without famous figures. As both shows demonstrate that icons like Superman are not necessary for creating compelling content, Supacell can continue to please science fiction fans who crave fresh narratives.

A closer look at Supacell suggests that the series will be a suitable successor to The Umbrella Academy, allowing the breakout to fill an upcoming gap. The recent superhero series puts emphasis on the real world, just like how The Umbrella Academy throws its cast into adulthood’s harsh realities. Both stories pivot away from stereotypical spandex suits to imagine what life would entail for superhumans navigating life’s most intimate challenges. Both shows develop a variety of interesting characters while drawing them together. With The Umbrella Academy’s strengths reflected in Supacell, Rapman’s creation has the potential to be a new superhero hit.

Supacell’s 100% Rotten Tomatoes score indicates that the series is worth a watch, both for superhero fans and perhaps viewers in general. Although superheroes have long soared across screens, Rapman’s creation blends tropes of these trending stories with a revealing exploration of the Black experience to spotlight injustices of the contemporary world that would continue to exist with the onset of Black superhumans. Like The Umbrella Academy’s consideration of the Civil Rights Movement, Supacell highlights issues that minorities cannot easily fix with power, adding depth to a genre where the main characters overcome any feat.
