Hasbro has unveiled a new San Diego Comic-Con exclusive Star Wars Black Series figure for Darth Maul that shows the former Sith Lord at the peak of his power, during Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. This year saw the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace‘s release, and Hasbro has released a range of figures to commemorate the first part of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars movies. Maul is perhaps the best candidate for such a commemoration, given how popular he has become since The Phantom Menace – Maul even has his own essential viewing list.

Hasbro has released Darth Maul Black Series figures from The Phantom Menace in the past, such as in the Phantom Menace three pack back in May. The newest Black Series figure, however, shows Maul on the Sith speeder he used to chase down Qui-Gon Jinn and Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine. There are a few other things that make this figure unique, such as the retro packaging of the box and the fact it is a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. While those who attend SDCC will have the first opportunity to purchase the figure, Hasbro will release limited quantities online after the convention’s end.

Maul had a long history in Star Wars, even after he seemingly died in The Phantom Menace. He was resurrected in Star Wars: The Clone Wars by the Nightsisters of Dathomir, and he went on to terrorize the galaxy without a Sith master for a long time. He eventually took control of Mandalore ahead of Order 66, and then became the leader of the Shadow Collective, a group of crime syndicates. Maul was always a dangerous dark side user, but this Black Series figure highlights the moment he was at his most deadly.

After he was cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo, Maul lost quite more than just his legs. Darth Sidious abandoned him, and Maul was left without a Sith Master or any form of guidance. This Black Series figure, however, shows Maul at his absolute most dangerous. The Sith were thought extinct for 1,000 years before The Phantom Menace, and Maul’s ambush of Qui-Gon and Anakin came as a complete surprise because of that false belief. Maul had his Sith training, the element of surprise, and opportunity on his side, as Qui-Gon was separated from his Padawan and on foot.

Darth Maul

Palpatine’s apprentice, Darth Maul was nothing more than a tool to winnow down the ranks of the Jedi ahead of Darth Sidious’ true plans. Discarded after he was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo, Darth Maul swore revenge against all those he blamed for his past struggles – Jedi and Sith alike. Maul tended to operate within the shadows, running various syndicates, and even established himself as a true rival for Palpatine on at least one occasion. He was eventually killed by Obi-Wan in a duel on Tatooine.

Maul was at his most dangerous while riding the Sith speeder, and Hasbro has nailed the look of such a deadly Sith apprentice. Everything, from his cloak and hood to the speeder itself, looks movie-accurate. Seeing Maul in such intricate detail highlights just how dangerous – and frightening – he was while chasing down Qui-Gon and Anakin. Hasbro’s Black Series Darth Maul figure shows exactly why the Jedi didn’t want to even consider the idea the Sith had returned by the time of The Phantom Menace: that was a very unsettling idea.
