Superman will include multiple characters from James Gunn’s DC Universe, and with a new round of set videos from the upcoming film, a very powerful character is all but confirmed to appear in the project. Instead of just focusing on the Man of Steel, the DCU’s Superman movie reboot will introduce multiple heroes that will go on to star in other projects. Adding to that, some villains and morally gray characters will also appear, including at least one crossover character that comes from the DCU’s first project, the animated Creature Commandos.

With such an intriguing cast, fans were anxious to see a first look at Superman’s roster of characters. After months of filming away from prying eyes, production on the DCU film moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where the Man of Steel was created. Now shooting in public, fans got to see the first set photos of David Corenswet as Superman and Clark Kent, as well as other important stars like Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and more. After the first look at announced characters, a new surprise player has been pretty much confirmed by set videos.

James Gunn Had Teased The Character

As part of Superman‘s filming starting in Cleveland, fans were treated to the first look at Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. The actor sported a comic book-accurate suit alongside Corenswet’s Superman in a destroyed part of Metropolis. On Twitter, @clevelanddotcom shared Superman set videos that tease the arrival of yet another DC character for the DCU’s first movie. While there is no dog present in the footage, the Superman set videos sure tease that Krypto the Superdog will appear in the film. Mister Terrific was spotted arriving at the “Pet It Be” pet store.

The hero looked like he was tracking something. Another Superman set video showed Mister Terrific making gestures toward what should be Krypto after he’s added through VFX, using a box of dog treats to seemingly try to teach the dog to fly. The videos end with Mister Terrific screaming in frustration at Krypto’s inability to fly on command. Previously, Gunn had teased that Krypto would appear in the DCU movie. Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Gunn joked about Chris Pratt playing Krypto. After Pratt said it looked like Krypto was in Superman, Gunn said, “It is a scoop, I guess.”

A Huge Feat Among Multiple Heroes

With Krypto all but confirmed to appear in Superman, the character’s DCU debut would shake up the power rankings for the movie. Like Corenswet’s Man of Steel, Krypto also gets his powers from the yellow sun Earth orbits around. There have been different iterations of Krypto over the years in DC Comics, but based on how the character seems to behave in the movie — judging by the way Mister Terrific was interacting with him — it seems like the DCU will use the third version of Krypto from the comics.

Instead of having a near-human intellect, that version of Krypto was like a regular dog, save for the character’s huge power. Like Superman, Krypto can fly, has super strength, heat vision, super smell, and pretty much any other power that Superman has. As the Man of Steel is the strongest character confirmed for Gunn’s Superman, Krypto’s appearance could make the dog the second most powerful character in the film. Krypto could also end up in third place in Superman’s power rankings, as it is heavily speculated that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will make her debut in Gunn’s Superman.

The Superdog Has Also Made Animated Appearances

Krypto’s appearance in 2025’s Superman would come almost three years after the character was last seen in live-action. Krypto debuted in the season 1 finale of the DC series Titans. Created by Cadmus, Krypto developed a loving bond with Joshua Orpin’s Superboy, instead of Superman, unlike should happen in the upcoming DCU movie. While Krypto has only appeared in live-action in Titans, the character has been a part of multiple animated projects over the years, recently even leading a movie played by Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson.

The Rock voiced Krypto in 2022’s DC League of Super-Pets. Before that, Smallville alluded to Krypto with a white dog who had been experimented on using Kryptonite, though that dog ended up being named Shelby. The animated series Krypto the Superdog focused on the character. Krypto also made animated appearances in multiple DC projects, which included popular entries like Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and more. After Gunn’s Superman, Krypto will appear in the DCU in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as the dog is important to that story in the comics.
