Ed, Edd n Eddy creator Danny Antonucci has explained why a revival of the series wouldn’t do well, no matter how the show ended up being revitalized. The 1999 series follows its three titular characters as they come up with various schemes to make money in oftentimes failed attempts to buy jawbreakers. Considered one of the best shows on Cartoon Network, the animated comedy ended with season 6 in 2009, with no concrete plans to continue the series or revive it afterwards.

Speaking with Animation Magazine about the show, Antonucci explained why a revived version of Ed, Edd n Eddy wouldn’t do well, even if it were put somewhere like Adult Swim. The creator explained how the show would simply be repeating the same ideas as the original, something that would keep it from standing out and make it duller because of this. Check out what Antonucci had to say about the show’s revival chances below:

[Laughing] Oh, sure. Do an AI version. For me, I’ve done what I was going to do. I mean, if the network wants to do it, all the best to them: It will fail miserably. They could have done a lot of things like spinoffs with some of the characters. I’ve been told you can do it for Adult Swim, and they’re all grown up, but then you are just repeating an idea. It was what it was and to go back and revisit would not be the same.

Could Ed, Edd n Eddy Still Be Revived (& Would It Be A Success)?

Some of Ed, Edd n Eddy’s best episodes involve the trio trying and failing to scam others into giving them money for jawbreakers, often resulting in hilarious slapstick in the process. The show is also assisted by a multitude of classic characters, such as Jonny and his wooden board friend Plank, Ed’s younger sister Sarah, and Eddy’s rival Kevin. The many interesting characters coupled with jokes that can sometimes go over younger audiences’ heads are what helped make the show stand out compared to other cartoons at the time.

While it’s possible an Ed, Edd n Eddy reboot could happen in the future, Antonucci’s statement indicates it wouldn’t include his involvement. The creator had a huge role to play in making the series a success, having creative control throughout its run. Without his input, the show would risk repeating similar stories as the original with some altered scenarios, none of which would live up to its source material. Not only would this make a revival pointless, but it would also prove the creator’s point regarding its lack of success.

Cartoon Network was a juggernaut on cable during the ’90s and these fantastic original series were a major reason for its success.

While it’s possible Cartoon Network would try to revive Ed, Edd n Eddy, as they’re planning to do for popular series like Adventure Time and Regular Show, the series’ unique tone wouldn’t work without Antonucci. Instead, it might be better for the network to consider a spiritual successor to the show, taking similar ideas and characters while making it into something entirely new. Given the success of the original, a reboot could still happen. But it might not be the right route for trying to replicate the show.
