Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Netflix has the option to order Star Trek: Prodigy season 3, but will the USS Protostar warp back into action once again? Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 goes bigger than season 1, with epic time travel, huge surprise characters, and it ends with a new mission of the young Starfleet heroes aboard the USS Protostar. Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is teed up, but will it happen?

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was a cosmic adventure through time and space that touched upon the breadth of the Star Trek universe, and even addressed how Star Trek‘s multiverse works. Admiral Kathryn Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) mission to rescue Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) aboard the USS Voyager-A saw the wannabe Starfleet cadets led by Dal R’El (Brett Gray) and Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) save the universe once again – this time from the combined threat of Asencia (Jameela Jamil) and a new reality-destroying enemy called the Loom. After 40 amazing episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy, of course, fans want season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy has numerous connections to Star Trek: Voyager, but when do the adventures of the USS Protostar occur in Star Trek’s timeline?

Will Netflix Order Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3?

Prodigy needs high viewership numbers and social media chatter

Netflix ordering Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is dependent on the following huge factors: how many millions of minutes Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is streamed, how much season 2 is binge-watched, especially in the first week and first 30 days, and the amount of social media posts about Star Trek: Prodigy. This is why Kate Mulgrew urged Star Trek: Prodigy fans to binge, watch, and post about season 2 in droves to #SetACourseForSeason 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman told Screen Rant that there are also other options on the table to continue the series besides a full 20-episode season 3 order. Netflix could ask for a shorter Star Trek: Prodigy season 3. Or Star Trek: Prodigy could return as an animated movie. However, all of this is dependent on Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s numbers being so undeniable that a season 3 order from Netflix is warranted.

How Long Is The Wait For Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3?

Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 wouldn’t be produced quickly

Star Trek: Prodigy‘s offices closed after production of season 2’s episodes was completed in December 2023. Given how long it takes to write 20 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy and the painstaking CGI animation required for the series, it takes roughly two years to complete a season of Star Trek: Prodigy. Realistically, even if Netflix ordered Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 this year, it’s likely the new episodes wouldn’t arrive on Netflix until 2026.

However, Kevin and Dan Hageman are eager to get back to work making new Star Trek: Prodigy if Netflix wants it, although it’s possible not everyone in the creative or production team might be able to return. However, if Netflix ordered something else besides Star Trek: Prodigy season 3, like an animated movie, production turnaround might be faster to premiere new Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Cast & Story Reveals

Prodigy season 2 set up a new USS Protostar mission

Given how Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s ending set up season 3, the entire crew of the new USS Protostar is set to return. This includes Brett Gray’s Dal R’El, Ella Purnell’s Gwyn, Maj’el (Michaela Dietz), the new Vulcan addition to the crew, and, of course, Hologram Janeway/Admiral Janeway. It’s also possible Robert Beltran would reprise Captain Chakotay and Robert Picardo could come back as The Doctor. There’s also no telling what new or legacy Star Trek characters could appear in Star Trek: Prodigy season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s ending ties into the emotional prelude to Star Trek: Picard season 1, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode “Children of Men”. Following the Attack on Mars by rogue synthetics, Admiral Janeway assigned her heroic young proteges command of the new USS Protostar, with a new mission to bring Starfleet’s message of hope and unity to the farthest reaches of the United Federation of Planets. It’s an irresistable setup that begs for Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 to happen.
