The new historical romance series, My Lady Jane, has a perfect opening for a second season, yet Prime Video’s intentions may be ruined by its source material. Before My Lady Jane was a TV series streaming on Prime Video, it was a book series written by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. The first My Lady Jane book, and consequently the first season of the show, follows Lady Jane Grey, a young woman who is unexpectedly made queen of England, and thus, is thrust into imminent danger that she must avoid, alongside her loving husband, Guildford.

In a short amount of time, My Lady Jane has seen quite a bit of success. The series garnered a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72% audience score. Critics praised the series for using its historical inaccuracies to create a series that is entertaining, snarky, and pure fun (Variety.) Rather than follow the sad history many are familiar with, the show infused the tragic tale with some much-needed magic and love. Though the series has yet to be confirmed for My Lady Jane season 2, the possibility is definitely still open, especially after the ending.

Jane & Guildford Survive

Although My Lady Jane is based on a 2016 book, the series doesn’t necessarily end as its source material intended. At the end of My Lady Jane, Jane and Guildford are set to be executed, as they were in real British history. However, with the help of King Edward, the couple escape their tragic ends and ride off to safety. Their story does not end there though, and the narrator confirms it. Mary is still on the throne and Jane realizes she must remain in danger if she is going to fight for what is right.

With the protagonists alive and well, My Lady Jane could easily continue on with a second season. In fact, the series almost promises it. By having Jane refuse to leave, the show is insinuating that Jane has more to do. Jane and Guildford may have survived, but the bad guy, Mary, is still at large. In this way, My Lady Jane season 2 seems very likely. Yet, the Prime Video series may have trouble brewing in its future considering who the second My Lady Jane book follows.

The Books May Have Killed My Lady Jane’s Season 2 Setup

Book 2 Does Not Follow Jane

Despite what My Lady Jane’s ending sets up, the source material does not align with a second season, or at least not a traditional one. Although Ashton, Hand, and Meadows did write three Lady Jane books, the second book does not follow Jane and Guildford. In fact, it follows a completely new Jane. Published in 2018, My Plain Jane tells the story of Jane Eyre, a young woman who becomes a governess and falls in love with a mysterious man, but not before she embarks on a hunt for hidden secrets and creepy ghosts.

In this way, My Lady Jane season 2 could continue Jane Grey’s story, but it would do so without the support of the source material. As far as the books go, Jane and Guildford’s story concludes at the end of book one. If Prime Video was going to be book-accurate, it would pivot to Jane Eyre in season 2. Ultimately, this puts the streaming service in a strange position. It could go back on its season 2 set up and delve into a new Jane-centric story, or it could continue Jane and Guildford’s story from scratch.

It Will Be Hard To Adapt Other Lady Janies Books If Season 2 Happens

My Lady Jane Will Have To Pivot

One risk that comes from continuing Jane Grey’s story in My Lady Jane season 2 is that the other Lady Janies books will be harder to adapt. By stretching Jane Grey’s story across two seasons, audiences may assume that the entire series is solely about her. However, Jane’s story will eventually end, and if Prime Video wants to adapt the other Lady Janies books as well, it will be a weird switch. Viewers may be confused about why the main character is changing three seasons in. Any choice Prime Video makes comes with risks.

Regardless of where My Lady Jane goes in the future, it will be great news to get a season 2. The first season was so strong, it would a shame for it to end so soon. Plus, whether season 2 features Jane Grey or Jane Eyre, the series will likely continue to be a great watch. No matter what, the future of My Lady Jane is bright.
