In Batman #148 by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez, the Bat-Family formulates a plan of attack with Bruce to stop Zur-En-Arrh once and for all. While Batman, Red Hood and Nightwing head out to confront Zur-En-Arrh, Tim ventures to save Damian Wayne, who has been taken captive by Zur-En-Arrh’s new Robin.

Tim finds Damian, revealing that the elder hero has a new Robin costume. The outfit is largely black, with green forearm guards and red gloves, green boots and mask, brown shoulder and knee pads, a red Robin symbol and a scalloped Batman-like cape.

Tim Drake has served in the Robin role for a considerable amount of time and he’s had a number of interesting outfits along the way. In his debut, he helped modernize the Robin look with full-length pants. He later switched up his Boy Wonder outfit by ditching the green and emphasizing the red and black as a tribute to his friend Superboy. Of course, he did take some time away from the Robin moniker to take on new identities like Red Robin and Drake, both with their own look. But Tim eventually returned to his old role and Robin outfit.

While few would argue that Tim Drake hasn’t been a good Robin, he’s been in the role longer than most and it’s arguably time for him to move on to his own identity. While that’s easier said than done, this costume is a good first step. It considerably tones down the Robin elements and makes it feel like a more unique costume. With a bit of reworking, Tim could easily eschew the Robin parts of his new costume altogether and transition to a completely new look with an identity that’s wholly his.

Admittedly, Tim has tried new alter egos and rarely have they worked out in the long run. But a more gradual change could be the route for Tim to go. Rather than a sudden switch (like when he became Red Robin), Tim has time to focus on what works and what doesn’t about his costume. During that evolution, he could easily come up with a new moniker he feels comfortable with. While there’s no guarantee that Tim is getting ready to say goodbye to the Robin role permanently, his new costume could make it easier for him to move on.
