If The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 wants to top the brilliant Mario Kart sequence from the first movie, choosing the right track will be key. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive hit, earning over $1 billion at the box office. One of the most eye-catching scenes is the Mario Kart-inspired chase scene, which features several in-jokes for fans of the games, such as Blue Shells, anti-gravity driving and gliding.

At this early stage, the plot of the upcoming sequel is still a mystery. It isn’t certain that there will be another Mario Kart sequence, but this would certainly be a welcome inclusion after the thrills of the first one. Chris Pratt has teased a potential “Nintendo Cinematic Universe” in the future. Mario Kart 8 features playable characters from Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon, so another Mario Kart scene might be a fun way to hint at this ambitious universe.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2: Release Date & Everything We Know

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smashing success which has prompted speculation about a sequel, and now Super Mario Bros. 2 is happening.

10

Piranha Plant Slide

First appearance: Mario Kart 7 (2011)

Mario’s journey in The Super Mario Bros. Movie begins when he is sucked into a Warp Pipe which sends him to the Mushroom Kingdom. The movie also ends with a Warp Pipe bringing him home, so it’s reasonable to assume that the sequel could also make use of this idea. Including Piranha Plant Slide would be a good way to draw more attention to Warp Pipes, and the sewer layout could also facilitate an action sequence that never leaves Brooklyn.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel could feature new kingdoms. Warp Pipes represent endless possibilities for the sequel’s setting, and it could be fun to see many different kingdoms in quick succession. A Mario Kart sequence could start in Piranha Plant Slide in Brooklyn before Mario and Luigi are teleported to many strange places every time they go through a pipe. This would be a good way to include several tracks at once.

9

Mario Kart Stadium

First appearance: Mario Kart 8 (2014)

The big Mario Kart sequence in the first Super Mario Bros. Movie is a chase scene, but the sequel could bring back the karts in a different way. Since so little is known about the plot at this stage, it’s possible that there might be a scene in which Mario has to prove himself in a more traditional race. Mario Kart Stadium would be the perfect setting for a racing scene in front of thousands of fans.

There are ways of incorporating a racing scene without making The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 a full-blown sports movie. However, a one-off competition might be a better way of introducing a different Mario spinoff game, like Super Mario Strikers or Mario Tennis, for example. Mario Kart Stadium is one of the first tracks which should be included if the sequel wants to focus even more on Mario Kart than the first movie.

8

Grumble Volcano

First appearance: Mario Kart Wii (2008)

Rainbow Road is probably the most visually stunning Mario Kart track, but there are still a few options if The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 wants to top the sequence from the first movie. Grumble Volcano would be great to see on the big screen. It doesn’t have the anti-gravity sections which make Rainbow Road so fun in the first movie, but it could be even more dangerous and exciting.

The massive drops of Rainbow Road could be even more terrifying if there’s a river of hot lava on either side of the track. Grumble Volcano also shoots out balls of fire which would be a hazard unlike anything in the first movie’s Rainbow Road sequence. Because of its foreboding appearance, Grumble Volcano could be Bowser’s domain, or it could introduce the Koopalings.

7

Daisy Circuit

First appearance: Mario Kart Wii (2008)

The Super Mario Bros. sequel might add Princess Daisy, but it will need to make up for her absence from the first movie. Princess Daisy has been a popular character for over 30 years, so she deserves a grand introduction. The first movie gives the Kongs a big entrance as Mario, Peach and Toad are driven through a kingdom that seems to take inspiration from DK Jungle.

Daisy could also be introduced with a trip to one of her Mario Kart tracks. Daisy Circuit is the most obvious choice, but she could appear at Royal Raceway or Daisy Cruise too, depending on her role in the story. Including Daisy could also give Luigi a more prominent role in the sequel. His character was pushed to the background in the first movie, so it could be a good time to give him a more interesting story of his own.

6

Yoshi Valley

First appearance: Mario Kart 64 (1996)

Princess Daisy might make an appearance, but one character who looks certain to be introduced in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is Yoshi. The ending of The Super Mario Bros. Movie shows a Yoshi egg in Brooklyn’s sewer system on the verge of hatching. This sequel could be about Mario and Luigi trying to return the baby Yoshi to its home in the Mushroom Kingdom, and this could easily lead to Yoshi Valley.

Yoshi Valley has multiple paths through the middle section, which could be a fun escalation on the moment in the Rainbow Road scene when Mario and Peach have to split up as they evade the Koopas. Yoshi’s role in the sequel is still a mystery, so his story might not necessarily suit Yoshi Valley, but this would be a good way to introduce the entire species in all their different colors.

5

New York Minute

First appearance: Mario Kart Tour (2019)

Although Yoshi will probably be a big character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, the egg is seen in the sewers of Brooklyn, not the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi will probably have to return to New York City at some point, and having a Mario Kart sequence based on New York Minute could show the magic from Mushroom Kingdom spilling into New York and causing chaos.

New York Minute was introduced in Mario Kart Tour, which has plenty of tracks which would be fun to see in the sequel. If Mario and Luigi have to spend more time on Earth, they could be racing around London Loop, Sydney Sprint, Bangkok Rush, or any of the others. The difference between the Mushroom Kingdom and the real world is one of the most enjoyable elements of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Mario Kart Tour could be the way to expand the world in the movie.

4

Twisted Mansion

First appearance: Mario Kart 8 (2014)

If The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 wanted to provide some kid-friendly horror, including Mario Kart tracks like Twisted Mansion would be a good way of doing so. Twisted Mansion is a kind of successor to an older course, Luigi’s Mansion, which is based on the spinoff games of the same name. The track appears to be right next to Boo Lake, which means that a racing sequence could feature both tracks one after the other.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 needs a new villain unless Bowser returns, and King Boo is one of the best candidates. King Boo makes a cameo appearance at Bowser’s wedding in the first movie, suggesting that he may have a big part to play in the sequel. Twisted Mansion and Boo Lake would be interesting locations to see come to life. These tracks also have underwater sections, which is something that the Rainbow Road scene from the first movie doesn’t explore.

3

Bowser’s Castle

First appearance: Mario Kart 8 (2014)

There’s a good chance that Bowser will return as the main villain for the sequel, despite the fact that he was defeated by Mario and Luigi. A post-credits scene shows him trapped in a cage, vowing his revenge against Mario. If he does manage to break out, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could return to Bowser’s Castle, an iconic location which didn’t get the attention that it deserved in the first movie.

Bowser’s Castle is the perfect location for a boss battle, so it would probably fit into the sequel’s climax if it does appear. This means that it might not be the ideal time for a racing scene, but the setting is just too good to ignore. With rolling boulders, flamethrowers and rivers of lava, Bowser’s Castle would be an exciting track with more of a third-act end game atmosphere.

2

Wario Colosseum

Final appearance: Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003)

Wario and Waluigi are two of the most obvious characters to introduce into The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Mario and Luigi’s evil counterparts are always compelling villains, but they’re also funny characters who could bring a different style of humor to the sequel. Wario Colosseum might provide the ideal setting to introduce Wario as a chaotic, flamboyant villain with the heart of an entertainer.

Wario Colosseum’s industrial design gives it a grim, dystopian feeling, as if the racers are competing solely for Wario’s entertainment. The track doesn’t appear in Mario Kart 8. The closest equivalent is probably Wario Stadium, but this is more X Games than Hunger Games. One of his other signature tracks is Wario’s Gold Mine. This has the same steep drops and sweeping curves of Wario Colosseum, so it would also make for a great karting scene.

1

Waluigi Pinball

First appearance: Mario Kart DS (2005)

Having Wario without Waluigi wouldn’t feel right, so The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will likely introduce both or neither. Waluigi Stadium would be one way to bring Waluigi in, but Waluigi Pinball is the more interesting option. The entire track takes place within a pinball machine, so the balls and bumpers would be quirky and unexpected hazards if the track appeared in the sequel.

The end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has Bowser trapped in a cage, still shrunk down after eating a Blue Mushroom. He could break free and regain his normal size, but another option would be for him to find a way to feed Blue Mushrooms to Mario and the rest of the heroes. If this happens, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could feature Mario Kart tracks like Squeaky Clean Sprint, Ribbon Road or Tick-Tock Clock.
