The possibility of a Star Trek: Prodigy movie is addressed by co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 premieres Monday, July 1st, on Netflix, with all 20 brand-new episodes releasing on the same day. Waltke previously stated that Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 wraps up the saga that began in season 1, but the ending leaves the door open for more. While fans hope this could mean Netflix ordering Star Trek: Prodigy season 3, an animated feature film is also a possibility.

Aaron J. Waltke was a guest on Virtual Trek Con’s Star Trek and Chill podcast, and host Ryan T. Husk asked him about a report from Screen Rant’s upcoming interview with Star Trek: Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman, where Kevin alluded to the possibility of a Star Trek: Prodigy movie. Aaron revealed that there have been discussions about Star Trek: Prodigy‘s feature film potential going back to 2019. Read the Q&A quote between Husk and Waltke and watch the video (around the 1:08:30 mark) below:

Ryan T. Husk: Have you guys discussed, internally, how fun it would be to write a movie?

Aaron J. Waltke: Oh, absolutely. You can find articles from 2019 where Brian Robbins and the folks at Nickelodeon and CBS, I think before our show had even come out, hinted that that was a possibility. So that got our wheels spinning, as far as what a feature could be. I have a note on my phone’s notepad. I have a whole docket that’s about seven pages long of just Star Trek: Prodigy ideas

Kate Mulgrew Urges Fans To Watch Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, Hopes For More Seasons

With Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 premiering on Netflix on July 1st, Kate Mulgrew urges fans to watch so that Netflix orders more seasons.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Or A Movie?

Why not both?

Nothing about Star Trek: Prodigy‘s scope, ambition, or imagination is small, so a Star Trek: Prodigy movie makes sense. The adventures of Starfleet hopefuls Dal R’El (Brett Gray), Gwyndala (Ella Purnell), and their resourceful, young alien friends are certainly grand enough for the big screen. Netflix holds the rights to order more Star Trek: Prodigy, and the streamer could opt for a 2-hour feature film format instead of Star Trek: Prodigy season 3. If that’s the case, Kevin and Dan Hageman, Aaron J. Waltke, and Star Trek: Prodigy‘s creative team already seem prepared for that challenge.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 3, with another full 20-episode order, would be the more attractive option than a 2-hour Star Trek feature film continuation — but why not both? Naturally, fans would love as much Star Trek: Prodigy as possible. Star Trek: Prodigy has the potential to be its own brand and franchise within Star Trek, and could span both television and feature films, as well as being tailor-made for other media like video games, action figures, etc. While fans would likely prefer a full-blown Star Trek: Prodigy season 3, a Star Trek: Prodigy movie would also be a welcome way to continue the saga of the ragtag heroes of the USS Protostar.
