Based on Sandra Barneda’s novel La tierra de las mujeres, Land of Women is now a dramedy on Apple TV+. The talented Eva Longoria, who has been part of the cultural zeitgeist since her starring role in Desperate Housewives, leads the cast of the mostly Spanish-language series as the happily married wine connoisseur Gala. Unfortunately, her husband borrowed a large sum of money unbeknownst to her and is now on the run from some pretty dangerous people — leaving her to look out for her daughter Kate (Victoria Bazua) and mother Julia (Carmen Maura).

Gala disguises the family’s escape as a girls’ trip, not wanting to admit the disastrous reality, and forces the three generations of women to head to Julia’s hometown in rural Spain. While there, mother, daughter, and grandmother all get to know each other and rediscover the secrets of the vineyard that was once Julia’s livelihood. Land of Women was created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira, who have worked together for two decades, alongside Teresa Fernández-Valdés and Paula Fernández.

Screen Rant interviewed Campos and Neira about the genesis of turning Land of Women into a TV show, the collaboration with Eva Longoria, and the duo’s favorite memories of filming in Spain.

Land Of Women Got Set In Motion Thanks To Eva Longoria

Screen Rant: What first sparked the idea for the project? Who had the first inkling of it, and where did you go from there?

Ramón Campos: The idea came from a proposal by Eva Longoria herself. She said she wanted to film something in Spain about wine, strong women, and in Spanish. From there, Gema, Bambu Producciones, and I started to look for stories. We found Sandra Barneda’s novel, which was the perfect inspiration for this.

Eva is the heart of the series, and obviously she also contributes as an executive producer. Gema, can you talk about collaborating with her and what she brought to the table?

Gema R. Neira: She’s a super smart, hardworking person. She has a huge background as an actress, but also as a producer and as a director, so working with her is very easy. She always makes sense when she says something, and she always thinks things through for the better. It was absolutely a pleasure working with her.

Speaking of collaboration, the two of you have worked on many projects together. What is that process like? What do you see in each other as partners, and how do you reach the finish line together?

Ramón Campos: It’s been 20 years of us working together, so we know each other really well. We know what the other one thinks, what we like and what we don’t like, so we try to be as generous as possible.

For example, Gema likes to take more risks than I do. I like to be more conservative, so we kind of pull and push, pull and push to reach the exact right middle point and get to what is best for us, what are new things for us, and what things are worth it.

Do you each have a favorite memory of filming in Catalonia?

Ramón Campos: Wow. When we first arrived in Girona, we were at dinner with Eva and all the cast. It was a nice afternoon, saying, “Well, here we are together after one year.”

In terms of sequences, the scene on the hill is my favorite. When the three women start shouting and cursing and insulting everyone who has treated them badly, that is my favorite scene.

Gema R. Neira: I agree with that being my favorite sequence, but I also love all the scenes where the three of them are together, like in the bed. That to me represents the show, and I can identify myself in those scenes and relate with that experience. Being with your mom and your daughter; expressing love to your loved ones. That is a beautiful scene.
