Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Jango Fett #4

Despite being set decades apart, Jango Fett and his son Boba endured very similar bounty hunter battles in the Star Wars timeline. In Marvel’s new Jango Fett series, the titular bounty hunter has been hired to retrieve a priceless relic that’s become the focal point of a major political crisis, one that puts Jango himself in the crosshairs of more than one rival hunter. In a similar vein, Boba Fett would find himself and his most famous bounty (Han Solo) at the center of a major galactic crisis, years after the death of his father.

As seen in Jango Fett #4 by Ethan Sacks and Luke Ross, Jango Fett realizes that secret forces are attempting to hinder his progress after the artifact he retrieved, The Hope of Glee Anselm, was revealed to be a fake. With the Nautolans and Anselmis on the brink of war in the wake of the artifact’s theft, Jango also learns that a bounty has been placed on his own head to keep the truth of this major conspiracy secret. With only Aurra Sing by his side, Jango is seen facing down a large number of rival bounty hunters.

Having to prove himself as the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter in this new series set just before the events of the Skywalker saga, Jango’s new bounty hunter battle carries some key parallels to Boba Fett and the “War of the Bounty Hunters” event that took place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

While certainly smaller in scale, Jango Fett taking on the predominant bounty hunters of the age feels an awful lot like Star Wars’ “War of the Bounty Hunters” crossover event. While en route to deliver a carbon-frozen Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt post-Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett’s prize was stolen by Lady Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn. Solo then became a key pawn in Qi’ra’s plans, resulting in a major galactic crisis that saw Boba Fett facing several rival bounty hunters who all wanted to claim his hard-earned bounty for themselves.

Years prior, Jango Fett was in a very similar boat as his future son, right down the particular hunters who all gathered to take him down. In “War of the Bounty Hunters”, Boba Fett notably had major battles with both the Trandoshan Bossk and the cyborg bounty hunter Beliert Valance. Similarly, Jango is featured facing Bossk’s father Cradossk as well as the cyborg Vigor Struk, among several other hunters of the day preceding The Phantom Menace.

Jango’s Bounty Hunter Battle Proved He Truly Was The Best

A Reputation Boba Certainly Lived Up To

Jango Defeats Vigor Struk in Jango Fett #4

Many of these bounty hunters saw this encounter as their chance to grow their own reputations by bribing Jango Fett to his knees. This was particularly true of Vigor Struk who was determined to prove his own superiority to the Mandalorian. Instead, Jango proved himself to be their better, just as Boba Fett does decades later during the Galactic Civil War with his own bounty hunter contemporaries. As such, it’s certainly a very exciting parallel between this Mandalorian father and his son in the Star Wars canon.

Jango Fett #4 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
