Set photos from the DCU’s Superman production have provided better views of Corenswet’s costume, which has given me hope that we may finally get a Batman suit I have longed for. When James Gunn’s DCU movie and TV slate was first announced, Superman was depicted as the true beginning of the franchise. However, another project that naturally caught my eye – as well as that of many others – was the DCU’s Batman project titled The Brave and the Bold.

This story will be based on Grant Morrison’s comic book storyline and will follow Bruce Wayne training his son, Damian Wayne, to be one of the various iterations of Robin. While a lot of my focus is naturally on Superman‘s exciting DCU story at the moment, I am eagerly anticipating more concrete details about the franchise’s version of Batman. Recently, my excitement for the latter has been bolstered by the same for the former, with set photos centering around Superman‘s costumes giving me hope that a specific type of Batman costume will be part of the DCU’s future.

David Corenswet’s DCU Suit Has The Best Elements Of Superman’s Comic Costumes

The DCU Superman Suit Pays Perfect Homage To DC Comics

Firstly, I wish to explore what it is about the DCU’s Superman suit that resonated with me so much. The new Superman movie costume was showcased from a lot of angles in the various set photos from the production of the movie, proving it to be a perfect homage to the source material. It is worth noting that the suit has a variety of things that make it stand out, from the Kingdom Come logo to the lines on the suit that make it more filmic. That said, I noticed several other aspects that implement the best comic details from Superman’s DC history.

The costume for the DCU’s Superman has finally been unveiled in all its glory, allowing a deep dive into every aspect of Clark’s new live-action look.

The first thing that stood out to me was the suit’s vibrant color scheme. After the drab, muted colors of Henry Cavill’s Superman suit in the DCEU, the bright blues, reds, and yellows perfectly evoke Superman from DC Comics. The other most notable element is the red trunks. No live-action Superman since Brandon Routh has sported Superman’s red trunks, which have even been somewhat phased out of DC Comics since the New 52. This proves how dedicated Gunn and Corenswet are to making the DCU Superman emulate the best parts of the character from the source material.

The DCU’s Batman May Finally Have A Blue Cowl

Batman’s Gray & Blue Suit Could Become A DCU Reality

Batman in Blue Cowl by Neal Adams

All of these comic-accurate elements from the new Superman suit only fuel the fire I keep burning that a Batman suit will one day sport the light gray and blue color scheme from classic DC Comics runs. The light gray suit with a blue cowl became an iconic look for Batman from the earliest days of Detective Comics and endured so throughout the Silver Age of comics. However, as Batman became more mainstream and began being developed into major movies, the character’s color scheme shifted to the blacks and grays that are prevalent today.

I do want to point out that I have loved most Batman appearances in live-action, with the darker color schemes working more often than not. That said, I would be lying if I said I wanted that color scheme to continue in the DCU. Instead, I would like to see Gunn’s version of Batman wear the light blue cowl, something that his version of Superman supports. With David Corenswet’s DCU Superman embodying several elements of classic Superman, who is to say the new iteration of Batman cannot do the same?

The Flash Is An Unlikely Factor In The DCU’s Batman Getting A Blue Cowl

One Of The Final DCEU Films Supports The New Batman Sporting A New Color Scheme

Surprisingly, 2023’s The Flash provides further support for the DCU’s Batman wearing a blue cowl. Thus far, one of the few DCU Batman updates we have been provided with was a report from Variety confirming that The Flash‘s director, Andy Muschietti, will be helming The Brave and the Bold. Little else about the film has been revealed since then, though DC’s 2024 Comic-Con panel could easily change this. Regardless of what is announced in the future, Muschietti is still attached as the director for the DCU Batman movie.

This was likely driven by his direction of The Flash, a film that included two – three counting George CLooney’s surprising cameo – versions of Batman. Ironically for a Flash movie, Muschietti’s handling of the various Batman variants was the standout of the movie, explaining why he was hired for the DCU. Concerning Ben Affleck’s DCEU Batman, The Flash had him wear a gray suit with a blue cowl. While this would have been enough to scratch my itch, the overall design of the suit was poor, primarily driven by the strange web-like netting scattered around the suit.

Ben Affleck’s role in The Flash is a complex one, both because of the character’s purpose, and due to alternations of DC’s changing movie landscape.

The overall bad design of the suit notwithstanding, Affleck’s Batman having a blue and gray color scheme in The Flash gives me hope for the DCU. It is clear that Muschietti has an affinity for this color scheme, otherwise he would not have changed Affleck’s already established DCEU suit from the dark gray cowl to the blue one shown in The Flash. In a movie focused entirely on Batman, Muschietti could take this color scheme and properly implement it on a better-designed costume, finally giving me what I have wanted for the Dark Knight for decades.

How Batman Having A Blue Cowl Would Benefit The DCU

The DCU Batman Changing Color Scheme Would Have Several Advantages

Robert Pattinson As Bruce Wayne In Full Batman Costume In GCPD HQ In The Batman

Although the DCU Batman having a blue cowl with a gray suit would be very exciting to me personally, and simply look cool, it also has some storytelling benefits. Firstly, it would differentiate the DCU’s hero from every single other live-action Batman actor. Of every iteration of the Caped Crusader in live-action, the closest we have come to getting a blue cowl was in Adam West’s original series. Even then, the costume swayed more black than blue. In giving the DCU this new color scheme, the batsuit would stand apart as its own thing.

Another advantage of this is that it would avoid confusion with Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise. Reeves’ series, starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role, will run concurrently with the DCU as an Elseworlds project. In giving the DCU Batman a much different color scheme to Pattinson’s, general audiences are likely to be less confused about which version exists in which franchise. Aside from these obvious benefits to the DCU’s canon and continuity, the new Batman would be fresh, unique, and different, all while emulating classic comics like his Metropolis companion in Superman.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
