The prospect of a sequel to one of Steven Spielberg’s best movies of the 21st century has me very excited, especially given the comments of one of the film’s stars. Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors, helming some of the 20th and 21st century’s most iconic films. As his career has gone on, the scope of Spielberg’s best movies has expanded across genre lines, ranging from thrilling action-adventure to grounded exploration of real-life tragedies.

Despite all the accolades his dramatic fare has earned over the last few decades, one of my favorite movies he’s made in the last twenty-five years was a light-hearted and colorful adventure romp that never got the sequel it richly deserved. Over a decade since it was released, I’d given up hope that we’d ever see the planned sequel for the film. However, one of the stars still has hope, which might give me more confidence about the project’s future.

An adaptation of Hergé’s comic book series of the same name, The Adventures of Tintin was an ambitious CGI-animated film that starred Jamie Bell in the title role. Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Toby Jones, and Cary Elwes fleshed out the supporting cast of the movie, which focused on Titntin and Serkis’ Captain Haddock as they race around the world to discover a legendary treasure before the ruthless Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine can. It was a blast and one of the best films of 2011, which made its stalled sequel plans incredibly disappointing.

I understand why the filmmakers are so excited about a second Adventures of Tintin, but I can also understand the difficulties in producing the film. The impressive animation baked into the film takes time to make, and the talent behind-the-scenes has been in high-demand since the original film. Spielberg and Jackson are two of Hollywood’s most in-demand filmmakers, the success of Andy Serkis and his co-stars makes filming tricky, and the original writers (including Edgar Wright, Steven Moffat, and Joe Cornish) have all gone on to other successes. Making Tintin 2 was always going to be hard, explaining the delays.

The Adventures of Tintin 2 still deserves to happen, especially since the filmmakers seem just as excited about the prospect as fans like me. The first film featured some truly awe-inspiring visuals, which may only look better thanks to improvements in animation technology. The Tintin stories that have been suggested to be the inspiration for the sequel are all very compelling in their own right, The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun being among the most critically-accclaimed entries in the globally loved series.

The Adventures of Tintin 2 deserves to happen because fans of the original recognize how the first movie reflects filmmaking as entertainment in its purest form. Broad and emotional, precisely directed with an animated world that still has weight and stakes, The Adventures of Tintin is one of the best animated adventure movies of all time. A sequel is long-overdue, especially if it finds ways to challenge or improve upon the original. I’ve been waiting thirteen years for a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, and I’d love to see Serkis proven right about its production.
