In One Piece, Luffy’s new powers, channeled through his Gear 5, seem to be able to accomplish just about anything he imagines. While these powers have been incredibly useful in battle, the freedom they represent can also be used to bring happiness to people, as perfectly exemplified when Bonney uses her own Devil Fruit to copy Luffy’s Gear 5, in the process accomplishing what her tragic father always dreamed of.

Kuma is perhaps one of the most tragic characters in the entire series. Not only was he born a slave and had to watch his parents die at the hands of the Celestial Dragons, but the love of his life was also taken from him. To make matters worse, the ending of his story was just as tragic, having become an emotionless creature who could not rebel against those once considered his enemies.

Still, it seems as if Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series, is giving the last member of the Buccaneer race a belated happy ending. His daughter, the intrepid and imaginative Jewelry Bonney, was given the power to fulfill her father’s wish in chapter #1118, all thanks to her newly gained Nika form.

Bonney Can Now Be the Liberator Kuma Dreamed

Bonney’s Powers Turned Her Into the Mythical Being Her Father Praised

As a child, Kuma often heard about the marvelous Sun God Nika, who was believed to go around the world freeing slaves from their masters. These tales helped the young and powerful Buccaneer and his parents hold on to their hope of a better future in which the Celestial Dragons did not own them. Even after his parents were killed in front of his eyes, Kuma remained faithful to Nika, wishing to one day be just like the deity and help slaves become free. His knowledge and faith in the sun deity were passed on when he adopted Bonney.

Nonetheless, as his body and mind became the property of the World Government in a deal to save his daughter from a terminal illness, Kuma could never achieve his dream. Yet, in chapter #1118, the original Pacifista’s dream was finally fulfilled by his daughter, as Bonney’s Devil Fruit powers gave her the possibility of becoming the embodiment of Nika. By imagining a future in which she is the freest being in the world, Bonney gains the ability to enter Gear 5, a state in which the user gains the appearance and powers of Nika.

Bonney Will Save the Slaves From the World Government

Bonney Could Finally Accomplish Her Father’s Mission

Bonney manages to use Gear 5 after imagining a future in which she is the freest being in the world.

The world of One Piece is one plagued with inequality, slavery, and discrimination. It was these circumstances that compelled Kuma to envision a world in which he could become like Nika and save everyone from the pain he suffered. Due to his unfortunate destiny, Kuma is unable to continue pursuing this goal. Nevertheless, Bonney is more than capable and now has the power her father always dreamed of. The powers of Nika have already been shown to be used to liberate oppressed communities. Luffy made use of these abilities to liberate the Land of Wano from the evil and villainous Kaido.

While Bonney’s abilities in this artificial Gear 5 have not been revealed, they are likely weaker versions of Luffy’s, but Bonney is still the second individual in centuries to hold the power of liberation. This will be more than enough to encourage Bonney to pursue her father’s dream. She could become a savior for those who have suffered under the Celestial Dragons’ rule. Her father’s mind and emotions may be long gone, but Bonney could become the one to spread his wishes and create a better world.

Bonney awakening the powers of Nika was an amazing and iconic moment that is likely to change the story of One Piece forever. While not yet confirmed, this seems to be Oda’s way of giving Kuma’s story a happy ending after all the pain he went through. Bonney may become a key part of stopping the World Government and bringing equality once and for all to the world of the series, and it would be the best realization of the power of freedom that Luffy and Gear 5 embody.
