From Software executive and game director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has weighed in on the possibility of a live-action Elden Ring adaptation. Listed as 2022’s Game of the Year by multiple publications and selling as many as 25 million copies worldwide, the open-world fantasy role-playing game has often been floated as an ideal candidate for a film or television adaptation by eager fans. Set in a fantasy realm known as “The Lands Between”, the game’s rich lore and intricate worldbuilding were bolstered by contributions from acclaimed Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Speaking with The Guardian (via VGC) about the possibility of an Elden Ring adaptation, Miyazaki suggested that while he has no objections to a possible movie adaptation, neither he nor the team at From Software have the necessary knowledge or experience to produce something in another medium. As such, he would be reliant on making a strong connection with a trustworthy partner. Check out his comments below:

I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie, for example. But I don’t think myself, or From Software, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play.

We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.

An Elden Ring Adaptation Already Has The Ideal Producing Partner

It would be folly for any movie adaptation to look past the game’s original story contributor.

While Miyazaki suggests that neither he nor his team have the skills necessary to bring an Elden Ring movie to life, it is somewhat odd that he is overlooking one of the game’s most well-known contributors. While Martin is best known for his work relating to his A Song of Ice and Fire books that provided the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones, he has a long history of working in the film and television industry stretching as far back as his time working as a writer on such shows as the anthology shows The Hitchhiker and The Twilight Zone in the 1980s.

Since the overwhelming success of his Game of Thrones adaptation, however, he has not only gone on to serve as the executive producer on the prequel series House of the Dragon, but he is involved in AMC’s Dark Winds series based on the novels by Tony Hillerman. If Miyazaki is serious about bringing an Elden Ring movie to life, it would make sense to turn to the same person responsible for helping to flesh out the backstory of his game’s expansive fantasy world.

George R.R Martin had some initial and crucial contributions to the game that made it what it is known for today

Moreover, by having Martin attached as a prospective producer on an Elden Ring movie, fans of the original game would likely be far more confident that the finished product would more closely follow the already established lore. At this stage, the prospects of an Elden Ring movie remain little more than conjecture. However, with Martin’s direct involvement, it could likely attract a great deal of studio interest far beyond the strengths of its established fanbase alone.

Elden Ring is a popular game released by From Software, creators of games such as Armored Core, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne. Players assume the role of a Tarnished, a being once exiled to the Lands Between and has returned to repair the Elden Ring after the events of “The Shattering.” “The Shattering” occurred when the offspring of Queen Marika battled to claim the shards of the Elden Ring, known as Great Runes. Their war has brought lawlessness, destruction, and chaos to the land, and the player will challenge them with the assistance of a Maiden known as Melina as they travel towards the great Erd Tree to face their destiny and to become the one true Elden Lord. Players can tackle the game how they choose and can adventure across realms as they build their character how they want – be it a powerful magic caster or a brutal swordsman – they will have complete control over their build.
