Star Wars: The Acolyte episode 5 has Star Wars audiences enthralled with its incredible lightsaber battle choreography, and one new video reveals additional details about its creation, including its links to Legends. The Acolyte is the newest addition to Star Wars movies and TV shows, and although it was heavily criticized at first, audiences seem to be coming around after this amazing fifth episode of the show. Not only did the episode feature astounding lightsaber fights, but it also pulled in the Legends concept of cortosis, a metal that could short out lightsaber blades.

Posted by starwars, the official Star Wars account on X, the video includes brief interviews with The Acolyte’s Action Designer and Second Unit Director Christopher Clark Cowan and Assistant Stunt Coordinator and the Stranger Stunt Double Lu Junchang. Cowan and Junchang both describe the influences previous Star Wars stories and concepts had on the battle sequence and the careful thought that went into the choreography.

It’s perhaps unsurprising that the fight sequence was so impressive with the Star Wars prequel trilogy as inspiration; although the prequels also faced backlash initially, they are now seen as some of Star Wars’ best movies with many of the most celebrated lightsaber fights in the franchise.

The Acolyte episode 5’s action-packed story delivered lightsaber fights in spades – the best ones I have seen since the iconic Battle of Heroes.

The Acolyte’s Fight Choreography Is Absolutely Spectacular

Truly, among all the lightsaber battles in Star Wars movies, the duels in The Acolyte episode 5 stand out. Not only did the Stranger—thought to be a Sith Lord—go toe-to-toe with Jedi Master Sol, but also, Jedi Padawan Jecki Lon held her own in a battle with him. In fact, The Acolyte held nothing back, as Jecki Lon was even brutally murdered during this battle sequence, stabbed through several times by the Stranger, who callously referred to Jecki as “it” after she died.

Moreover, the inclusion of cortosis was absolutely thrilling, and it made the lightsaber battles feel brand-new. At first, it wasn’t quite clear what was happening to the Jedi’s lightsabers as they were fighting with the Stranger, but it became clear that contact with the Stranger’s armor, obviously made out of cortosis, was leaving their lightsabers temporarily unusable. Although this concept came from Legends, it made these fight scenes feel brand-new and raised the stakes considerably.

Of course, it’s difficult to raise the stakes more than The Acolyte already has. The show has made it abundantly clear that it will not hesitate to kill off major characters at the drop of a hat, and each episode contains its own major reveals and plot twists. While Star Wars: The Acolyte may have suffered from extreme backlash at first, it is proving itself as a truly innovative addition to Star Wars, and this video makes it clear that significant work went into making that a reality.
